Job Summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a candidate to train to be an Occupational Therapist via the apprenticeship route. Taking this route allows you to get paid while studying and achieving your career goals. The OT Apprentice posts are full-time and within Navigo's Cedars based Mental Health Therapy Team.

Main duties of the job

• Under the supervision/guidance of the Occupational Therapist and/or Physiotherapist, the candidate will develop, implement, and evaluate programmes of care on an individual and group basis.
• Develop and maintain good professional links with statutory, voluntary and private organisations and the multi-disciplinary team.
• To work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team and maintain communication networks with staff, service users, and carers.
• To be an active member of the Therapy Service and wider MDT.
• To participate in MDT meetings and Therapy Team meetings where relevant.
• To implement Navigo Policies and Operational Procedures.

Job Description

Job responsibilities

The successful candidate will be providing direct care to service users under the supervision of registered healthcare professionals. They will be working in both acute and community settings. They will be primarily focused on therapeutic interventions, implementing treatment plans, and promoting service user recovery, independence, social inclusion, quality of life, and future self-management when possible. They will be managing their own diary and caseload and will also support other staff carrying out delegated responsibilities where appropriate, supported by registered/senior staff. They may be attending Multidisciplinary Reviews and be able to contribute to professional discussions. They will be aware of their scope of practice and work in close liaison with Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists and the wider Therapy Team. If successful in application to university, they will be expected to complete required coursework related to occupational therapy theory, practice, and ethics as part of the apprenticeship program and keep up to date with all the requirements and expectations of the university.

• Communication & relationship skills: Work with a wide selection of partners including statutory and non-statutory agencies. Effectively communicate complex and/or sensitive information where there are barriers to understanding. This includes communication concerning adult protection, abuse, cognitive impairment, and other risks surrounding a service user’s mental or physical health. Maintain accurate clinical records according to professional standards. To participate in Clinical and Management supervision. Develop a therapeutic relationship with service users and their carers. Manage highly confidential information in respect of members of the public in accordance with local and national policy.
• Knowledge, training and experience: Attend appropriate training as identified in supervision. Have specialist knowledge and training through formal training and apply appropriately. Work within the carer development framework for Occupational Therapy focusing on the four interacting pillars of practice namely Professional Practice, Facilitation of Learning, Leadership, and Evidence, Research and development.
• Analytical & judgement skills: Contribute to discussions in relation to decisions about the range of options for treatment and care plans based on judgement of service users' needs. Participate in the assessments and contribute to decision-making regarding group work and assessment of appropriate service users to be offered this particular intervention.
• Planning & organisational skills: Under supervision, prioritise, plan and coordinate own workload and activities in line with the changing needs of the team and service, ensuring all policies and professional requirements are met on a daily basis. Participate in caseload/diary management and review.
• Physical skills: Be trained in RESPECT. Be able to follow moving and handling risk assessments, and on occasion write them and issue with all teaching/rationale to service users/carers/staff.
• Responsibilities for patient/client care: Participate in programmes of care for service users and act as associate worker for service users. Review risks, re-assess, provide guidance to care teams as indicated. Seek support when needed. Participate in governance activities.
• Responsibilities for policy & service development implementation: Adhere to all Navigo policies and legislation relating to the role. Contribute/comment to the evaluation of procedures and propose improvements, critically explore new ways of working when required.
• Responsibilities for financial and physical resources: Use equipment and resources in a careful and responsible manner.
• Responsibilities for human resources: Participate in Navigo clinical supervision strategy. Assist in the induction of new staff. Participate in PDR, identify own developmental needs and maintain a professional portfolio.
• Responsibilities for information resources: Accurately document episodes and information relating to client care in patient notes, using agreed methods of documentation. This will be done in accordance with Navigo policies, professional guidelines, and data protection legislation. Manage highly confidential information in respect of members of the public in accordance with local and national policy.

Additional Criteria Essential

• Clean UK driver's license

Qualifications Essential

• Three GCSE passes at grade C/grade 4 or above including maths, English, and science or equivalent level 2 functioning skills
• 112 UCAS points from A levels or equivalent BTEC national qualifications
• Or
• Access to higher education course in health studies science, nursing or other science-based course or currently enrolled on a course
• Or
• A previous degree in a related or social science subject
• Or
• Open university study in natural or social science.

Experience Essential

• Computer literacy
• Previous experience of working in a rehabilitation setting
• Awareness of people living with a mental health condition such as anxiety, depression, dementia, psychosis

Desirable

• Experience with SystmOne

Knowledge Essential

• Active listening and a non-judgemental approach can help apprentices build rapport with others
