Assistant Accountant - Part Qualified (Maternity Cover)

The Assistant Accountant position, which we are seeking to fill on a 15-month maternity cover basis, is a key role in our lean finance function. You will be reporting to the Finance Manager, who holds primary responsibility for UK accounting, financial operations, and external reporting/compliance. Your role is expected to be roughly evenly split across Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and General Ledger Accounting.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Accounts Payable and Working Capital
    • Overall management of the Purchase ledger.
    • Processing AP Inbox / Purchase Invoices and new supplier setup.
    • Administration of purchase control (Zahara) and expense (Expensify) software.
    • Responding to AP-related queries from suppliers and colleagues.
    • Supporting the Financial Controller (FC) and/or Finance Manager with spend/expense approvals and payments.
  • Accounts Receivable
    • Customer invoicing and accounting for billing changes, cancellations, credit notes, and refunds.
    • Responses to queries from customers (and colleagues in customer-facing departments).
  • General Ledger / Accounting
    • Bank reconciliations.
    • Participating in tasks and responsibilities relating to the monthly/annual accounting and balance sheet control.
  • External Reporting
    • Supporting as needed with annual accounts/corporation tax filings, VAT returns, and ONS surveys.
  • Project work as appropriate and as capacity allows.
  • Performing other duties as assigned by the Finance Manager or Financial Controller.

Your Profile:

You will be at least part-qualified ACA/ACCA/CIMA with significant practical experience across a broad range of accounting and financial operations responsibilities.

Essential Skills / Experience:

  • Technical
    • At least part qualified (ACA/ACCA/CIMA).
    • Experience of Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and general accounting.
    • Experience using Xero.
    • Excellent Excel skills.
  • Personal
    • Positive can-do mentality; able to juggle multiple deadlines and manage competing priorities.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    • High level of numerical analytical aptitude.
    • Values honesty, clarity, excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Desirable
    • Exposure to finance processes/infrastructure in an established company and/or of successfully establishing these in a scale-up.
    • Strong knowledge of UK GAAP and VAT reporting/compliance; exposure to and/or knowledge of external audit of UK entities and of balance sheet control.
    • Advanced Excel including financial modelling principles; understanding of relational data models and data manipulation techniques.
    • Experience using Zahara, Expensify, and Salesforce.
