Job description

We are seeking a full-time Postdoctoral Research Assistant to join the Geotechnical research group at the Department of Engineering Science (central Oxford). The post is funded by the US Army and is fixed-term to 21 November 2025.

You will join a research project investigating the seismic vulnerability of flood protection systems on layered soil deposits, with a focus on partial drainage effects. You will contribute to the numerical modelling part of the project, which will benefit from novel element level and centrifuge testing experimental results. You will set up and validate numerical simulations, generalize experimental observations, and offer insight on the response of selected case studies.

You should hold a PhD/DPhil (or be near completion) in numerical modelling for geotechnical earthquake engineering problems, preferably with a focus on liquefaction of sands.

For more information about working at the Department, see www.eng.ox.ac.uk/about/work-with-us/.

Only online applications received before midday on 6 May 2025 can be considered. You will be required to upload a covering letter/supporting statement, including a brief statement of research interests (describing how past experience and future plans fit with the advertised position), CV and the details of two referees as part of your online application.

The Department holds an Athena Swan Bronze award, highlighting its commitment to promoting women in Science, Engineering and Technology.
