We are hiring a Director of Human Resources and Organisational Development!

Join NHS Scotland as our next Director of Human Resources and Organisational Development to lead and deliver the Board's workforce strategy to continue the Board's journey of a Better Workplace.

About us

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is Scotland's largest health board, serving a diverse population of 1.3 million across six local authority areas. With an annual budget of £4.5 billion and a workforce of over 40,000, we deliver a comprehensive range of health services spanning primary, secondary, community, and specialist care. As we strive to enhance population health and deliver person-centred care, our dedicated staff are at the heart of everything we do.

The role

We are seeking an exceptional leader for the position of Director of Human Resources and Organisational Development (HR&OD). This is a pivotal role, responsible for shaping and implementing NHSGGC's workforce strategy, ensuring that our people are supported to deliver outstanding care to the communities we serve.

As Director, you will oversee the HR&OD function, including recruitment, workforce planning, staff development, employee relations, and organisational change. A champion for equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), you will embed these principles across the organisation, fostering an inclusive, supportive, and high-performing workplace culture.

You will lead transformational workforce initiatives, enabling NHSGGC to adapt to the evolving demands of healthcare delivery. By collaborating with senior leaders, trade union representatives, and national bodies, you will align our workforce strategies with NHSGGC's corporate objectives and Scotland's national healthcare priorities.

Key responsibilities
  1. Develop and implement NHSGGC's Workforce Strategy, aligned to organisational and national goals.
  2. Lead core HR functions, including employee relations, recruitment, workforce planning, and professional development.
  3. Drive change management and organisational development initiatives, embedding our values of care, compassion, dignity, and teamwork.
  4. Lead our vision to create a diverse and inclusive workplace, promoting EDI across all levels of the organisation.
  5. Build collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including Board members, HR Directors across Scotland, and Scottish Government officials.
  6. Champion initiatives that enhance staff engagement, wellbeing, and communication.

About you

The ideal candidate will be a visionary leader with a proven track record of delivering workforce strategies and transformational change in complex, large-scale organisations.

You will be a skilled communicator, adept at building relationships and navigating a fast-paced environment. A commitment to EDI and fostering a positive workplace culture is essential.

Key attributes
  1. Chartered level membership of CIPD.
  2. Significant experience in HR leadership at Board level or equivalent.
  3. Expertise in workforce planning, organisational development, and cultural transformation.
  4. Strong understanding of employment law and compliance within a complex organisational context.
  5. Proven ability to engage and collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
  6. Resilient, innovative, and committed to continuous improvement.

This is a unique opportunity to shape the workforce of one of the UK's most significant healthcare organisations. You will play a vital role in delivering NHSGGC's vision of high-quality, person-centred care while contributing to national workforce strategies that benefit Scotland's healthcare system.
