Summer Student Employment Opportunity

Position: Destination Development, Tourism Summer Student

Start Date: May 5, 2025

Employment Status: Summer Student (up to 16 weeks)

Reporting To: Director of Economic Development and Tourism

Union Affiliation: Non-union

Closing Date: April 7, 2025 at 8:30 am

Contract Duration: May 5, 2025 – August 29, 2025

Position Summary: Perth County is recruiting for the position of Destination Development, Tourism Summer Student to assist the Tourism Officer with implementing various tourism growth strategies and programs to stimulate Perth County’s visitor economy. This position will support the implementation of various destination development programs, events, and services across the county.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Provide support for strategic programming involving agritourism, experiential tourism, cycle tourism, etc.
  • Assist with coordination of various tourism events, tours, and initiatives.
  • Actively provide support for special projects including tourism media campaigns, business support initiatives, seasonal campaigns, etc.
  • Liaise with residents, visitors, local operators, and businesses as required.
  • Distribute marketing materials such as the Tourism Brochure, Farm Gate Map, and Farm Gate Map Signage packages to businesses around Perth County.
  • Provide marketing support to promote local businesses, destinations, and events.
  • Provide a range of information on local resources, amenities, activities, and events to visitors.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.
  • Ensure that Occupational Health and Safety practices and County of Perth policies and procedures are adhered to; wear any personal protective equipment required to ensure personal safety and report any known hazards and/or incidents in the workplace to the immediate Supervisor.
Qualifications:
  • University or College student with interest in marketing, business, hospitality, and tourism.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent customer service/interpersonal skills and professional ability to interact with the public.
  • Creative thinking skills with ability to come up with new solutions to problems.
  • Strong technology and digital marketing skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and establish priorities.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Strong organizational skills; detail-oriented, able to coordinate activities and tasks meeting conflicting priorities and timelines.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and have reliable access to a vehicle.

Shift: Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm (35 hours per week)
Occasional work during evenings and weekends may be required.

Hourly Rate: $18.73

To be eligible for summer student employment, applicants must meet one of the following:

  • Be a full-time secondary or post-secondary student at an accredited institution.
  • Be recognized as having a full-time status by their academic institution while applying for school vacation, practicum or work term, or planning to return to full-time studies in the next academic term.
  • Be in their final year of study and not planning to return to full-time studies, but still eligible for summer student employment until they graduate.

Students participating in education and retraining programs at the post-secondary level, though not full-time students, are eligible for related summer student employment opportunities, where appropriate.
