Senior Civil Design Engineer

My client, a leading Tier 1 main contractor delivering major water and wastewater infrastructure projects, is seeking an experienced Senior Civil Design Engineer on a freelance basis. This role involves working on the design and delivery of water treatment works, covering clean water and wastewater schemes as part of the ongoing AMP7 and AMP8 investment cycles.

As a key member of the design team, you will take technical ownership of civil engineering designs, working closely with multidisciplinary teams, including process, mechanical, electrical, and structural engineers. You will be responsible for ensuring designs meet all technical, safety, and regulatory requirements, while supporting project delivery from concept through to construction.

This is a contract opportunity, offering the flexibility of remote working, with occasional travel to project sites and client meetings as required.

Key Responsibilities

1. Lead and coordinate the civil design process for water treatment works, including potable and wastewater projects.
2. Develop designs for reinforced concrete structures, pipelines, earthworks, drainage, and hydraulic structures.
3. Produce, review, and approve detailed design calculations, drawings, technical reports, and risk assessments.
4. Ensure designs comply with UK water industry standards, including WIMES, Sewers for Adoption, CDM regulations, and BS/Eurocodes.
5. Support the development of temporary works designs and construction methodologies.
6. Engage with internal and external stakeholders, including clients, regulators, subcontractors, and site teams, to ensure seamless project execution.
7. Contribute to value engineering initiatives, identifying cost-effective solutions while maintaining quality and compliance.
8. Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers within the team.

Essential Requirements

1. Degree in Civil Engineering (or equivalent); Chartered status (ICE or IStructE) desirable.
2. Extensive experience in civil design for the water sector, with a strong background in AMP7/AMP8 projects.
3. Expertise in reinforced concrete structures, pipelines, drainage, and earthworks.
4. Strong proficiency in design software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MicroDrainage, or similar tools.
5. Thorough understanding of CDM Regulations, H&S best practices, and environmental considerations.
6. Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects, and meet tight deadlines.
7. Experience working within a design and build (D&B) contracting environment preferred.
8. Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
