Position Summary Information

Primary Purpose

The Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement (MESA) program is a statewide initiative that helps underserved and underrepresented students achieve success in STEM studies and careers. MESA at University of the Pacific supports university students primarily in the School of Engineering and Computer Science (SOECS) and 6th-12th grade students in approximately 25 public schools in Stockton and Lodi Unified School Districts.

In collaboration with MESA staff, the MESA Coordinator will work with the SOECS Student Services team to coordinate activities and programs related to the MESA University and MESA College prep programs. The MESA Coordinator will be primarily responsible for supervising student staff, event planning, management and execution for both the College Prep and university programs; MESA Day planning, management, and execution; and MESA website management; MESA College Prep field trips; and MESA middle and high school student activities including recruitment, summer programs, and leadership.

The MESA Coordinator will also support the MESA team with university student intake and creatively contribute to achieving long-term program goals and building strategies to meet the changing needs and services of Pacific MESA.

Essential Functions

  • Event management (including program planning, logistics, execution, and follow-up) for MESA College Prep and MESA University Program, ensuring compliance with university and grant requirements.
  • MESA Day Program Planning, Management, and Execution.
  • Responsible for high school student extra-programmatic activities, recruitment, summer programs, and leadership for 10 MESA high schools, with plans to grow the program to more schools.
  • Recruit, supervise, and manage MESA student staff (approximately 10-15 students per year) and manage MESA Advisors (teachers), including:
    • One-on-one meetings with MESA advisors at their school sites.
    • Being the first point of contact in managing advisor questions, requests for supplies, and reimbursements.
    • Coordinate delivery and receipt of supplies.
    • Assist advisors with all other requests throughout the school year.
  • Assist with development and streamlining of procedures for MESA programming: events, materials management, training, and advisor management.
  • Manage all aspects of MESA sponsored field trips for 26 MESA middle and high schools.
  • Assist with MESA University student intake meetings and with semester and regular check-in meetings.
  • Assist with managing budgets and materials.
  • Use knowledge of competitive STEM activities to create new curriculum for K-12 competitions. Perform other duties as assigned or requested.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of program coordination, program specialist, or K-12 administrative experience.
  • Two (2) years of experience managing a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Event Planning Experience
  • Demonstrated interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics).
  • Ability to work and connect with first-generation students.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative.
  • Familiarity with sponsored program operations.
  • Experience in competitive STEM curriculum creation.
  • Experience managing budgets.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds of community served.
  • Familiarity with Canvas and Electronic Personnel Action Forms (EPAFs), Advise, and Asana.
  • Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
  • Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.

Duties require constant sitting and repetitive motion while using a computer keyboard and phone. Frequent walking, standing, and simple grasping are necessary. Occasional climbing stairs, walking across campus, stooping, and reaching may be required. Constant communication using both spoken and written means is essential. May be required to lift up to 25 lbs.

Work Environment/Work Week/Travel:

Work performed primarily in a standard office environment. Some evening and weekend work is required, including 8-10 Saturdays annually and evening work 1-3 times a month. Some travel will be required. A valid driver’s license is required. The incumbent must also be able to meet the University’s fleet rules and be eligible to drive for University business.

Hiring Range

Hiring Range: $66,560 per year. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
