Job Introduction

Ambitious output makes BBC Oxford one of the most exciting places to work in BBC Local. We are looking for a highly creative Political Reporter who can bring politics to life in a simple and straightforward way which reflects the lives of our audience.

Main Responsibilities

BBC Oxford is looking for an experienced Broadcast Journalist to work two days per week as part of a job-share alongside our existing Political Reporter who works three days a week. You will produce content for radio bulletins and programmes as well as writing for online colleagues and producing pieces for TV, including content for the weekly “Sunday Politics South” on a rotation with other Political Reporters across the South.

Are you the right candidate?

As a political reporter, you’ll be across all the relevant social media feeds, follow those in the know on X (Twitter) and get excited at the prospect of pouring over online agendas and minutes of council meetings. You’ll know all the MPs in your patch and have their numbers in your phone. You’ll have an in-depth knowledge of local and national politics and how it affects our listeners’ lives. A true story-teller, you’ll be able to explain complex stories in a simple and captivating way. You’ll understand the need for digital first and how you can achieve this. A strong understanding of the BBC’s editorial guidelines and values is essential, along with an ability to uphold them.

Reporting to the News Editor, you’ll sit as part of a wider South newsgathering operation, liaising with your colleagues in television and online, ensuring they are fully across the stories making headlines in Oxfordshire. You will have regular opportunities to make reports for the regional part of the Sunday Politics programme on BBC1 South.

As part of your application please provide an MP3 of no more than 3 minutes of recent on-air work that demonstrates your ability to explain a detailed story in an engaging way. Please send this MP3 to by midnight on 26th Feb 2025.
