The role

As part of a collaborative and innovative team, you will join a team of Network, Storage, Linux and Automation Engineers. This position reports to the Client Support Team Lead and offers opportunities to develop your expertise and skills in a dynamic environment.

The role centres around looking after the physical datacentre infrastructure of a high profile client with high uptime and information security needs as part of a dedicated managed services team.

The Datacentre Engineer is responsible for day-to-day Business as Usual moves, adds and changes, as well as physical incident response (often as "remote hands") and project work for lifecycle equipment replacement and new infrastructure installs.

You will be primarily responsible for "on the ground" activities within the datacentres over fifty racks, working with colleagues from Nephos as well as the client to deliver an outstanding datacentre managed service.

Role Responsibilities

  • Installation, labelling, tracing and fault-finding of both copper and optical cabling and related equipment.
  • Cable and Airflow management.
  • Equipment racking / de-racking; connection of all cabling (data, power).
  • Labelling of equipment.
  • Maintaining DCIM and CMDB records.
  • Disk and other FRU replacement.
  • Ensuring datacentre works are carried out to a very high standard of quality.
  • Following all relevant standards and processes.
  • Following colleague instructions as "remote hands", or working independently, to identify, troubleshoot and resolve issues.
  • Maintain the datacentre environment in a well ordered and tidy state.
  • Contribute to maintaining and improving datacentre documentation, SOPs and standards.
  • Following all Health and Safety procedures and utilising required PPE.
  • Liaise with 3rd party engineers, ensuring standards and processes are followed.
  • Identify and point out areas needing improvement, maintenance or otherwise "at risk".

Technical Skills/Experience

  • 5 years of datacentre engineer/technician work
  • Expertise with optical and copper cabling, patch panels, horizontal (structured) cabling, patching and pluggable transceivers.
  • Expertise in handling datacentre cabling.
  • Familiarity with datacentre equipment handling tooling such as pallet jacks and server lifts.
  • Familiarity with working with 3-Phase rack PDUs and phase-balancing IT loads.
  • Familiarity with DCIM tools such as NetBox.
  • Familiarity with airflow management and equipment cooling.
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills.
  • Demonstrable experience of cable management practices in a live datacentre environment.
  • Experience working in a Change Managed environment, and with ITIL processes.
  • Ability to work in a 24x7 live Production environment which cannot be allowed to have an unscheduled outage.
  • Working at height using an appropriate stepladder, including working on up to 47U high cabinets and in cable trays above this height.
  • Familiarity with datacentre networking is an advantage.

Advantageous Skills

  • Familiarity with datacentre networking is an advantage.
  • Experience in replacement of disks in Storage arrays / Storage Servers.

Personal Skills/Attributes

  • Must be comfortable with "lone working" in a datacentre environment at times.
  • Must be confident with manual handling of server and similar equipment.
  • Driving license; access to vehicle with business insurance cover (Mileage is paid).
  • The applicant must live in, or be planning to relocate to, somewhere along the M4 corridor between Bath and West London. Occasional central London office days will also be required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Excellent time management and teamwork skills
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Demonstrate aptitudes across Nephos' eight Pillars of Service Excellence, and live the company values.
  • Legally eligible to work in the UK.
