Job description

Square Peg is seeking a Financial Controller to join our Sydney team for a 12-18 month parental leave cover. If you're passionate about start-ups and technology, and ambitious to be part of a global investment business at the forefront of change, read on...

About Square Peg :

Square Peg is a venture capital firm that helps founders from our corners of the world shape the future. Founded in 2012 in Australia, Square Peg combines the best of a local partner with a global network of companies and now backs founders early and repeatedly from three of technology's most exciting regions: Australia & New Zealand, Israel, and Southeast Asia.

Five funds in with US$2.9 billion in assets across its venture capital and public equities funds, Square Peg is the only investor that backed Canva, Airwallex, and Rokt, three of Australia's highest-valued private tech companies, and is honoured to partner with Fiverr, Aidoc, and Tomorrow.io in Israel and Doctor Anywhere and Kredivo out of Singapore.

Our name describes us well as individuals, as investors and partners, and as a team. We value and foster creativity; we continually search for better ways to do things; we are contrarian thinkers; and we are not wedded to conventional wisdom of how a venture capital firm should operate. We are charting our own course.

We are privileged to have as our investors forward-thinking superannuation funds, entrepreneurs, endowments and family offices that share our vision.

About the role :

This is a rare opportunity to become an integral part of a small team with a global presence.

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, in this diverse role you will:

  1. Take ownership of fund/financial accounting, corporate accounting, financial reporting, monthly board and management reporting, forecasting, budgeting, financial planning and analysis, financial modelling, tax and structuring.
  2. Have primary responsibility for planning, implementation, process improvement, managing and running of our complex and cross border finance activities, reporting and tax in Australia, Singapore and Israel.
  3. Deliver fund audits and the financial component of reporting to our investors (including a variety of special purpose reports). This will include ad hoc interaction and communication with a wide range of investors.
  4. Liaise closely with relevant external providers including external Fund Administrator, tax advisors, as well as internally with the Partners of Square Peg, CFO & Financial Accountant, as well as the broader operations team.

Skills & experience :

  1. At least 7 years of experience in finance, with a strong background in financial control, ideally within an investment/funds management or tech company setting.
  2. Hold CA/CPA (or equivalent) qualification.
  3. Proven technical proficiency across tax, corporate and fund accounting.
  4. Track record in delivery of strong and effective relationships both internally and externally (demonstrated success in supporting sophisticated investors).
  5. Performance history of excellence gained from working within fast-paced, high growth, high-output team environments.
  6. Experience within an investment/fund management environment, especially Private Equity or Venture Capital, would be advantageous (but not essential).

It is crucial you are an independent thinker with energy and enthusiasm to effect positive outcomes both operationally and commercially in a high growth business. You will possess the following attributes:

  1. Self-direction and autonomy.
  2. High-curiosity and ownership.
  3. A practical, outcomes-driven approach to work.
  4. Clear and concise communication.
  5. The ability to establish trust and rapport quickly.
  6. Collegiate and collaborative approach.
  7. Passion for tech, start-ups and/or investing.

Culture :

At the heart of Square Peg's global team is a commitment to our shared values, underscored by decency and integrity: be yourself, anchor to optimism, unleash curiosity, empower through trust and be bold.

We invest the most important resource in our founders, teams and people; time.

Benefits :

Square Peg is a people-first working environment.

We encourage flexible working and have beautiful team facilities to come together in. We organise regular team-building events to bring our global team together while promoting a culture of fun and wellness.

  • Flexible work policy.
  • Wellness programme and allowance.
  • Learning allowance.
