Job description

Job Summary

The post holder will actively support the theatre practitioners and multi-disciplinary staff within the theatre environment throughout the peri operative phase.

To provide effective patient centred care implementing care that meets the needs of the patients and their families/carers in conjunction with the qualified theatre practitioner.

To support staff in Clinical procedures, protocols and guidelines to ensure the effective delivery of service to patients in the peri-operative phase.

Please note, this vacancy may close early should a sufficient number of applications be received.

An Enhanced DBS with barred lists for both Adults & Children is required for this post.

Main duties of the job

  • Ensure clinical practice complies with the Trust Policies and Procedures.
  • Participate in the preparation of theatre prior to the list, ensuring all equipment is clean and available for use.
  • Assist in the safe positioning of patients in theatre, as per the trust policy.
  • Support the scrub/ Anaesthetic team during procedures, anticipating their requirements.
  • Assist the scrub practitioner to prepare for the cases.
  • Participate in swab and instrument checks.
  • Safely dispose of clinical waste and sharps as per trust policy.
  • Handle and prepare specimens, ensuring correct labelling and packaging for transportation to the laboratory.
  • Assist in the documentation of patients records both written and electronic in accordance with the trust policy.
  • Teach circulating duties to all new grades of staff.
  • Answer bleeps and phones and relay messages.
  • Clean and check patients trolleys daily.
  • Transfer patients from wards and departments to theatre and return.
  • Deliver specimens to pathology each morning.
  • Collect or return blood and blood products from pathology.
  • Assist with collection and removal of rubbish and linen to appropriate collection points.

  • Participate in out of hours service as service needs demand.

TEACHING & TRAINING RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Attend regular mandatory update training, fire lectures, moving and handling and resuscitation training within the requirements of the Trusts health and safety policy.
  • Promote an environment within ones own work area that is conducive to learning.
  • Actively develop own learning and clinical skills required to provide a high standard of Care.
  • Support learners in the area as own skills develop. Assist in the training programmes developed for individuals undergoing training in your work area.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

  • NVQ Level 2 in Healthcare/Operating Department Support, willing to work towards or equivalent experience
  • GCSE Level or equivalent in English and Maths

Knowledge & Experience Essential

  • Knowledge and understanding of the Theatre Support Worker role and responsibilities

Desirable

  • Experience working in a Healthcare setting
  • Experience working within a Surgical/Theatre Department
