About Us

The Scotland Office (SO) occupies a unique place at the heart of the UK Government. It supports the Secretary of State in delivering the Government’s missions in Scotland. Our departmental priorities are focused around:

  1. Economic Growth
  2. Green Energy
  3. Brand Scotland
  4. Tackling Poverty

The Scotland Office ensures Scottish interests are fully and effectively represented at the centre of the UK Government, and that the UK Government’s responsibilities are fully and effectively represented in Scotland. The Office also has the key strategic objective of custodian of constitutional arrangements and in particular the devolution settlement in Scotland.

The Scotland Office works extensively with colleagues across the UK Government and with the Scottish Government and engages with a wide range of stakeholders in Scotland. The Office has around 80 staff split between Edinburgh and London.

The Role

The position of Director for the Scotland Office represents an exceptional and strategically vital opportunity to engage at the very heart of government. This is a critical role during a pivotal time for the Scotland Office, which is intensifying its efforts to serve as Scotland’s definitive voice within the UK Government while simultaneously championing the UK Government's interests across Scotland. The Office is now playing a key role in delivering the UK Government’s missions in Scotland through building relationships, making devolution work well, and by focusing on the four key priorities listed above.

The post holder will also have a key role in championing the interests of Scotland within the UK Government, advocating for the UK Government in Scotland, and supporting UK Government Departments to build their devolution expertise and to consolidate the established community of UK Government civil servants based in the UK Government’s Edinburgh Hub, Queen Elizabeth House.

We encourage applications from people from all backgrounds and aim to have a workforce that represents the wider society that we serve. We pride ourselves on being an employer of choice, championing diversity, inclusion, and wellbeing, and aim to create a workplace where everyone feels valued and has a sense of belonging.
