Position Summary Information:

Primary Purpose: Reporting to the CFO and EVP for Finance and Operations, the Director of Risk Management & Insurance is responsible for building and administering the University’s risk management and insurance programs. This position directs and leads the development of risk management strategies and related policies and procedures. They influence University risk owners to manage and mitigate operational risks.

Essential Functions:

  1. Insurance and Risk Management Financing:
  • Identify exposures, analyze and evaluate risks, and oversee the placement of insurance programs, including property, casualty, educator’s legal liability, cyber, and more.
  • Design optimal insurance structures leveraging third-party insurers.
  • Lead strategy discussions, negotiate terms, and oversee the placement of insurance coverages.
  • Oversee administration, record-keeping, and oversight of insurance programs and policies across various loss types.
  • Maintain current, accurate, and meaningful insurance, premium, legal, loss, claims, and related statistical risk management records.
  • Evaluate the University’s insurance portfolio and manage insurance claims.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with insurance carriers and manage broker relationships.
  • Negotiate insurance policy terms and pricing and manage special insurance programs.
  • Conduct an annual review of the schedule of insurance policies, including a review of renewal policies for errors or omissions. Make recommendations for correction, addition, or deletion.
  • Review contracts for risk-related provisions to avoid improper risk assumption.
  • Administer the University’s workers’ compensation program and insurance. Investigate and analyze work-related accidents and injuries.
  • Maintain oversight of all incidents and claims.
  • Coordinate all data collection necessary to purchase new and all renewal insurance policies and programs successfully. Maintain contact with the broker regarding additional underwriting data needs and solicit essential data from the university community.
  • Strategic Planning and Compliance:
    • Develop and implement short and long-term strategic plans for university risk management.
    • Participate in University-wide contingency planning and business continuity efforts.
    • Ensure the organization’s risk management policies and strategies comply with applicable regulations, standards, and strategic initiatives.
    • Develop and implement best practices for risk assessment and mitigation.
    • Oversee and monitor all operational risk management activities.
    • Develop and recommend policies and procedures to support an overall University strategy to manage the cost of income loss protection and risk financing.
    • Develop and deliver education and training to cultivate a culture of risk awareness and appropriate mitigation activities.
    • Lead and provide key inputs to enterprise risk or other committees overseeing the enterprise risk management process, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives.
    • Analyze policies, procedures, programs, and projects for potential financial and operational effects on the University and provide recommendations and solutions to mitigate negative impacts.
  • Budgeting and Reporting:
    • Prepare and manage budgets for assigned indices.
  • Other Duties:

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Education/Experience/Certifications:
      • Ten (10) years of experience in the management and/or coordination of risk management and insurance programs and administering safety and health-related programs.
    • Certification Requirements:
      • Associate in Risk Management (ARM)
      • Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) or Certified Risk Manager.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Advanced knowledge of risk management, insurance programs, and the administration of safety and health-related programs.
    • Positive attitude, proven ability to work successfully with diverse populations, and demonstrated commitment to promote and enhance diversity and inclusion.
    • Successful supervisory experience as evidenced by in-depth knowledge and understanding of staff supervision, demonstrated success in effective leadership, and the ability to promote teamwork and professional development.

    No unusual physical requirements. Requires no heavy lifting, and nearly all work is performed in a comfortable indoor facility. The job frequently requires sitting, talking, and hearing. Occasionally requires standing, walking, reaching, climbing, or balancing, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling, handling objects with hands, and lifting up to 10 pounds.

    Work Environment/Work Week/Travel:

    Work performed during normal business hours. May be requested to work additional hours to meet business needs or deadlines. Some travel is required to other campuses or conferences/meetings.

    Externally imposed deadlines: set and revised beyond one’s control. Interruptions influence priorities, making it difficult to anticipate the nature or volume of work with certainty beyond a few days. Meeting deadlines and coordinating unrelated activities are key to the position. May involve conflict-resolution or similar interactions involving emotional issues or stress on a regular basis.

    Hiring Range: $130,000.00 - $160,000.00 per year. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
