About Borough Market:

Borough Market is one of the city's most beloved markets. A vibrant and historic food market, it is bursting with an array of fresh produce, artisanal treats, and international delicacies. Borough is run by a charitable trust, dedicated to ensuring the market remains a valuable asset for the local community. The trust oversees strategic governance, adapts to changes in the food world, and promotes sustainable, ethical practices.

The Role:

We are seeking an exceptional Director of Operations with a strong background in the food industry to join our senior leadership team. This pivotal role involves leading and managing the operational activities and processes of the market estate, ensuring the smooth and effective running of the market on a day-to-day basis. The Director of Operations will work closely with the CEO to develop the business strategy for both the Borough Market Trust and its commercial arm.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Market Management: Oversee the leadership, resource, and financial management of the cleaning, security, and trader development divisions. Ensure health & safety and environmental standards are met at all times.
  2. Operational Strategy: Develop and contribute to the overall Borough Market strategy and business plan. Implement the Borough Market Food Policy and manage associated processes.
  3. Trader Development: Lead the trader development and support programme, including provision for accommodating new and incubating businesses.
  4. Sustainability: Lead on the Borough Market sustainability plan and ensure implementation of associated processes.
  5. Budget Management: Manage the operations budget of up to approximately £2.5m.
  6. Leadership & Management: Develop and lead the operations team, promoting the core values and vision of the Trust.

The Candidate:

We are looking for a passionate individual with a significant operations background at director level and a strong, proven track record in the food industry. The ideal candidate will possess outstanding leadership skills, exceptional communication skills, great people skills, and a passion for Borough Market and its community.

Qualifications:

  1. Educated to degree level.
  2. Senior management level experience in operations management within the food industry (at least 5 years).
  3. Well-developed commercial and financial acumen.
  4. Knowledge of strategic, operational, and business planning.
  5. Excellent computer skills – MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Access.
