Job Summary

The Business Improvement Team’s primary focus is driving business improvement and optimising our services within the wider DIO organisation. From ideation to cultural embedment, we will work with the organisation to ensure that high quality Defence infrastructure and customer service is delivered more quickly, efficiently, and effectively with limited impact to front line staff.
The Business Design Analyst plays a key role in analysing, documenting, and translating business needs into clear and actionable requirements that drive organisational change and improvement. They will work closely with stakeholders to gather requirements, identify opportunities for optimisation, and support the alignment of business needs with strategic objectives. This role is responsible for ensuring that business requirements are clear, well-documented, and accurately communicated to relevant stakeholders, facilitating the smooth execution of projects and initiatives.
The Business Design Analyst will take the lead on complex projects, collaborating with business change leads, users, and other analysts to deliver insightful analysis and recommendations. They will contribute to business transformation by applying structured methodologies such as Lean, Six Sigma, and Agile to the identification and clarification of business needs and requirements. Additionally, they will play a significant role in developing business analysis best practices, ensuring consistency in the approach to capturing and refining business requirements across the organisation.
The Business Design Analyst will act as a critical friend to the business, constructively challenging assumptions and helping ensure business requirements are accurate, feasible, and aligned with strategic goals.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.
Job Description
Business Requirements Gathering & Documentation
- Apply business analysis techniques to capture and document business requirements, including functional and non-functional requirements.
- Develop clear, concise, and actionable documentation, ensuring requirements are aligned with business objectives and technical constraints.
- Use tools and notations such as user stories, use cases, and process flows to represent business needs.
- Ensure consistency and clarity in requirement documentation, following established standards and best practices.
Business Analysis and Improvement- Lead and facilitate workshops with stakeholders to capture business requirements and identify improvement opportunities.
- Develop detailed business analysis artefacts, including requirements documentation, user stories, and processes.
- Conduct root cause analysis and problem statement development to identify opportunities for improvement.
- Write and issue reports with key findings and recommendations based on business analysis.
- Collaborate with change, technology and data teams to ensure business requirements are well understood and implemented effectively.
- Support the adoption of continuous improvement methodologies, such as Lean and Agile, across business functions.
- Work with stakeholders to develop and evaluate non-technical solutions, such as policy changes, process adjustments, and organisational improvements, ensuring they meet business needs.
Stakeholder Engagement & Alignment- Work closely with process owners, business leads, and project sponsors to understand their needs and objectives.
- Constructively challenge assumptions and existing processes to identify opportunities for improvement.
- Develop strong working relationships with business and technical stakeholders to ensure alignment of business requirements with organisational goals.
- Collaborate with Continuous Improvement and Business Analyst communities to share insight and best practices.
Support to the Wider Team- Support corporate and organisational objectives by contributing to broader business analysis and change initiatives.
- Provide training, coaching, and mentoring to Business Analysts and other stakeholders on business analysis techniques and improvement methodologies.
- Promote best practices in business analysis and requirements gathering across the organisations.
- Stay updated on industry trends, methodologies, and tools to enhance the organisation’s approach to business analysis.
Person specificationEssential:- Practitioner in business analysis.
- Experience mapping processes utilising a recognised notation i.e., BPMN.
- Experience facilitating workshops with stakeholders to develop current and target states.
- Experience of identifying and managing relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- An understanding of Business Architecture and its value to an organisation.
- Be able to see the bigger picture and understand relationships between processes and other architecture.
- Attention to detail and ability to work at pace.
Desirable:- Experience using model-based representations that can be adjusted as required to collect, aggregate or disaggregate complex and conflicting information about the business.
- Experience using and managing artefact repositories.
- Experience mapping business architecture including the technology and data produced and consumed.
- An understanding of requirements development and root cause analysis.
Qualifications- Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) qualification or suitable equivalent.
- BCS Business Analysis qualification or suitable equivalent.

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working. This is a non-contractual arrangement where all office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to capacity and any required workplace adjustments.
