Role Overview:

We are seeking a Digital Electronics Engineer who will be a key contributor to the product development team, providing electronics expertise and taking ownership of a wide range of tasks. This role focuses on ultrasonic corrosion monitoring and defect detection, utilizing wired and wireless enabled devices. You will be responsible for the design and development of hardware and embedded software for manufacturing sensor and systems product solutions to support client needs and meet company goals.

An exciting and varied product-focused role requiring an individual with excellent practical and technical skills, capable of working independently and leading projects with external suppliers and contractors. You will also integrate analogue electronics and power management into systems that can be used in explosive or hazardous environments.

You will work closely with ultrasonics engineers and business development teams to meet client demands in products that will serve the Aerospace, Automotive, Nuclear, Manufacturing, Plant, Process Control, and Oil & Gas sectors.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage projects to develop sensor & system products for customers in Oil & Gas, Petrochemical, Nuclear, Fossil Fuel Energy, and Process Control, following the Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) process.
  • PCBA design, appraisal, and prototyping to ISO 13485 design control and compliance, selecting appropriate components with robust layout.
  • Specify design requirements for electronic hardware, including wireless and wired communication, data storage, power management, and integration with analogue ultrasonic modules.
  • Liase with suppliers and produce bill-of-materials for new board designs.
  • Firmware appraisal, modification, development, validation, and verification.
  • Diagnose performance of PCBA designs and components, testing prototypes for functionality, compliance, certification, and ensuring operational testing once in manufacture.
  • Fault find and repair PCBAs and finished devices. Support existing hardware in operational use.
  • Debug and implement customer-led modifications to software and capability.
  • Lead electronics design development within the scope of ATEX and IECEx explosive environment requirements.
  • Become a technical expert in the application of technology with a strong focus on customer needs.
  • Provide technical advice to specified clients as part of the business development process, supporting and working with sales and technical colleagues.
  • Present progress and feedback from development activities to technical and commercial colleagues to support product development.
  • Support technical marketing activity and generate data for presentations, case studies, and marketing communications.

Essential Skills and Personal Attributes:

  • At least 5 years of experience designing digital circuits, including using embedded processors and FPGAs, digital signal processing, and filtering.
  • Demonstrable understanding of modern design simulation and verification tools.
  • Programming of embedded software/firmware in a common language, such as C/C++.
  • Knowledge of instrumentation, sensors, and monitoring system products within the Oil & Gas, Energy, and Process Control sectors.
  • Experience working under a quality management system, including documentation control, change, and configuration management.
  • Excellent project management skills and experience of successful project delivery.
  • Good communication skills to articulate aspects of electronics development to other engineering disciplines.
  • Entrepreneurial, innovative, and resourceful, able to work independently to meet deadlines within a small team in a dynamic SME environment.
  • Comfortable assisting with any tasks and learning new skills in other engineering areas.

Desirable Skills and Attributes:

  • A degree or equivalent in Electronic Engineering or a related field.
  • Experience with analogue circuits, especially ultrasonics.
  • Knowledge or experience in 4-20mA, ModBus, HART wired, or WirelessHART, Bluetooth, or LoRa wireless communication.
  • Experience in EMC management and testing.
  • Knowledge of intrinsically safe circuits.
  • Experience in meeting compliance with standards and technical file control.
