The opportunity:

We have an exciting brand-new opportunity for a Development Underwriter – Technology to join our NMUK Broker team working hybrid across any of our UK offices in Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham or London. We arrange our business into five channels, with the NMUK Broker Channel being the largest and fastest growing of all our UK business units. Our broker engagement and subsequently pipeline and new business volumes have increased recently, and we are growing our team.

In order to focus on delivering exceptional support and ensure delivery on our growth ambitions, we segment the UK broker population into three categories: strategic, key, and development and connect.

The role of the Development Underwriter will be to support the development plan for brokers across regional areas, based upon the defined opportunity and with the Head of Financial Lines and Broker Development Director to achieve the strategic aims and income goals outlined in the PMR Broker Channel financial plan.

In this role, you will grow and maintain strong broker relationships and provide an excellent service to our brokers. You will have a strong desire to be highly visible to brokers, encouraging development meetings and regular telephone contact to underwrite complex Professional and Management risks including Technology.

What you’ll be doing:

  1. Provide and maintain a good level of underwriting, demonstrating a thorough knowledge of company guidelines and authority levels.
  2. Underwrite complex new business within the defined underwriting authority.
  3. Actively manage and provide an efficient new business service to brokers to maintain good relationships and to achieve the best outcome and win business.
  4. Responsible for the performance of brokers, developing robust relationships.
  5. Develop new broker relationships as identified and demonstrate our capabilities to ensure Markel is a preferred provider of insurance for PMR/Technology.
  6. Provide input into the Head Of Financial Lines reporting on broker activity and new business production.
  7. Provide a quarterly update to the Head of Financial Lines and Broker Development Director on key performance criteria for brokers and team performance and development.
  8. Maintain broker data on the CRM system to ensure it is up to date and accurate.
  9. Work with the team to identify and secure prospects and opportunities from broker panels, recording on the CRM system in accordance with the CRM Working Practices guide.
  10. Promote a coaching and mentoring culture which provides both challenge and support to each team member in the pursuit of a consistent and high-quality underwriting service and approach.
  11. Developing pipeline with partner brokers to drive growth.
  12. Work closely with internal partners to deliver the right outcomes for allocated brokers and their customers.

Our must haves:

  1. Proven relevant underwriting experience in an underwriting role and demonstrable technical skills.
  2. Track record in building and developing broker relationships.
  3. Background and experience in either Technology, Professional Indemnity, Commercial Combined or Liability classes of business.
  4. Have excellent communication skills.
  5. Demonstrable IT skills including MS Office, Word, PowerPoint & CRM and show willingness to learn our systems.
  6. Proven ability to win business whilst maintaining underwriting field.
