As a Design Manager at WSP in the PMCM Rail team, you will be responsible for enabling the delivery of complex rail projects of regional, national, and international significance. A Design Manager will lead in the integration of multi-disciplinary design teams, ensuring project delivery of high-quality, timely, and budget-compliant outcomes.

We collaborate closely with external clients and with internal multi-disciplinary project teams. To deliver most effectively, we utilise WSP offices, client offices, and/or site locations to deliver programmes of strategic regional and national importance.

Your Team

We are a diverse, inclusive, and enthusiastic team of Project, Commercial, and Design Managers working in the Rail sector, focused on the common goal of delivering solutions for our clients. Our passion comes from creating and shaping the built environment through tailored project delivery as we strive to be the best in class.

Your Role

Lead team

  • Leading in the integration of multi-disciplinary design teams, ensuring project delivery of high-quality, timely, and budget-compliant designs.
  • Coordinating relevant disciplines through project meetings and target-led workshops, enabling critical issues to be resolved in a timely manner, and ensuring the project meets safety, functional, and regulatory requirements.
  • Establishing robust processes and procedures to manage the project in conjunction with the client’s team.

Technical oversight

  • Ensuring design packages meet safety (Safe By Design), functional, and regulatory requirements.
  • Analysing, processing, and responding to design transmittals consisting of drawings, specifications, reports, and other project-related documents.

Client liaison

  • Developing and managing client and stakeholder relationships through effective listening and influencing skills.

Quality Assurance

  • Ensuring quality management processes are in place to ensure all design work is completed to the highest standards.
  • Itemising scope of services, client briefing schedules, documentation, and regular assessment against industry standards to help ensure a better set of deliverables.

Commercial and Risk Management

  • Reviewing and evaluating designer’s quotations to ensure they align with the project’s scope, budget, and client requirements.
  • Managing changes and delays affecting the project and ensuring these are resolved or mitigated accordingly and ensuring project management processes are consistently improved and implemented, e.g. change control.
  • Identifying and mitigating potential risks associated with the design and construction phases.
  • Dealing with RFIs, early warnings, and general communications to reduce project risk and ensure successful project delivery.

Project Planning

  • Leading on the project’s technical planning process, ensuring timely and efficient delivery of design work.
  • Updating the design delivery programme, resourcing, and instructions. Having a thorough understanding of project scope and design responsibility.

Documentation

  • Ensuring accurate design meeting records and action logs and holding relevant parties to account for their actions.
  • Ensuring all relevant documentation is maintained in line with project requirements.

Innovation and Efficiency

  • Driving innovative design solutions and implementing processes to enhance design efficiency and productivity.

Qualifications & Experience

  • A degree in a relevant engineering or management discipline (such as project or construction management, engineering, science, or building).
  • Chartered membership of a relevant professional body, or nearing completion of this status would be advantageous.
  • ARB/ RIBA/ MICE/ MIET/ APM/ PMI/ Six Sigma certifications are considered beneficial.
  • Experience in design or project management with an architectural background.
  • Experience in leading multi-disciplinary teams and liaising with stakeholders.
  • Experience working on significant projects with demonstrated client-side project delivery (design and build).
  • Experience working with organisations such as Network Rail, HS2, TfGM, and other rail-related entities is seen as advantageous.
  • Proven ability to manage successfully within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Demonstrates curiosity, is solution-focused, and responsive to client issues.

On-site presence would be required (3 days per week).
