Job Description

Job Title: Design Area Lead Engineer

Location: Hinckley, Leicestershire

Report To: Functional Lead or Vehicle Lead

Role Overview:

The Area Lead Engineer is responsible for the design and development of a wide range of components or areas of a motorcycle. This includes ensuring that these components meet time, cost, quality, and specification constraints set out by the NMIP process, both directly and through the management of Package Leads, Senior Design Engineers, and Design Engineers.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Design and Development Delivery: Lead the design and development phases for a range of motorcycle components or areas, consulting with specialists and chief engineers as needed.
  2. Time, Cost, Quality, and Specification Management: Ensure all deliverables meet the established targets in alignment with the NMIP process and key performance indicators (KPIs).
  3. Leadership and Planning: Manage Package & Design/Senior Design Engineers, ensuring the timely delivery of projects while maintaining a focus on technical excellence.
  4. Cross-Functional Collaboration: Communicate effectively across the supply/value chain to maximize team working and project effectiveness.
  5. Project Planning: Support the creation and maintenance of detailed project plans to ensure that current and future deliverables are met.
  6. KPI Delivery: Drive performance against Cost, Time, Quality, and Specification targets, both personally and through the leadership of any direct reports.
  7. Risk and Process Management: Follow established processes to minimize risks and improve effectiveness, while challenging the status quo when appropriate.
  8. Escalation of Issues: Raise concerns, risks, and issues through the reporting chain when necessary.
  9. Mentorship: Provide guidance, mentorship, and performance management to direct reports to foster their professional development.
  10. Ad-Hoc Duties: Support additional projects or tasks as required by the manager.

Person Specification:

Essential:

  1. Qualifications:
  2. Maths and English GCSE grade C or above.
  3. MEng or BEng in an Engineering-related subject.
  1. Experience & Skills:
  2. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  3. Experience in planning, monitoring progress, and leading a team.
  4. Proven ability to give constructive feedback and coach individuals for development.
  5. Experience in meeting targets and delivering projects efficiently.
  6. Demonstrated commercial awareness and understanding of the consequences of design activities on the business.
  7. Strong technical expertise with a focus on attention to detail.
  8. High-level decision-making and problem-solving skills for complex issues.
  1. Experience in Automotive/Manufacturing:
  2. Previous experience in an automotive or manufacturing environment.

  1. Stand-in for Functional Leads: The Area Lead may be required to stand in for Functional Leads when needed.
