DEFINITION:

Deputy Probation Officer I

Under general supervision, to investigate cases of juvenile delinquency, status offenders and adult referral for probations; to supervise a caseload of assigned probationers; and to do related work as required.

Deputy Probation Officer II

Under direction, to perform professional case work services for adults and juvenile offenders involving the referral, supervision and rehabilitation of adult and juvenile offenders and/or their families; and to do related work as required.

Deputy Probation Officer III

Under direction, to provide lead supervision and direction for other Department staff; may schedule training and ensure staff compliance with training requirements; to perform the more complex professional case work services for adults and juvenile offenders involving the referral, supervision and rehabilitation of adults and juveniles and/or their families; and to do related work as required.

REPORTS TO

Chief Probation Officer, Chief Deputy Probation Officer, and/or Unit Supervisor.

Examples of Duties:

The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all the duties listed.

Deputy Probation Officer I:

  • Receives adult and juvenile cases assigned by supervisor.
  • Conducts an inquiry into the nature of the reported offense or conduct of the client and the circumstances surrounding it.
  • Interviews client’s family and interested individuals to determine environmental, employment, financial, and marital status.
  • Talks to the referring law enforcement officer about the case.
  • Prepares and submits a court report outlining pertinent information and recommending a course of action.
  • Presents the report in court and answers the judge’s questions concerning the case.
  • May transport juveniles to/from court.
  • Reviews the case files.
  • Develops a plan for making regular contacts with the probationer and providing counsel, guidance, and support.
  • Holds regular interviews and counseling sessions with probationers.
  • Arranges for financial payments to be made.
  • Monitors behavior to determine compliance with conditions of probation.
  • Records contacts in the case file.
  • Reviews progress in the case with supervisor.
  • May serve as on-call officer for juvenile problems.
  • Serves as intake officer in determining if a juvenile petition should be filed; determines whether court action is necessary.
  • Does crisis counseling as required.
  • Conducts search and seizure of person, property, and vehicles.
  • Advises clients of available community resources.
  • Cooperates with State and local welfare, mental health, and law enforcement agencies in cases of mutual interest.
  • May arrest probationers (adults and juveniles) if necessary.

Deputy Probation Officer II

Carries an assigned caseload in the supervision of adult or juvenile offenders; serves as intake officer in determining if a juvenile petition should be filed; determines whether court action is necessary; interviews adults or juveniles, their families and interested individuals to determine their environmental, employment, financial or marital status; does crisis counseling as required; conducts pre-sentence supplemental and dispositional investigations; formulates plans of probation and presents written and/or oral recommendations to the Court; monitors behavior to determine compliance with conditions of probation; prepares affidavits of probation violations; conducts search and seizure of person, property and vehicles; conducts individual and group counseling; may advise clients of available community resources; may serve as placement officer (schedules placement visits and evaluates psychological reports, makes assessments for appropriate placement of minors, compiles assessment and treatment plans, works with placement agency, conducts follow up on final results); may act as on-call officer for juvenile problems; transports individuals in custody when necessary; composes and dictates petitions, correspondence and case histories; maintains Court records and reports; cooperates with State and local welfare, mental health and law enforcement agencies in cases of mutual interest; may arrest probationers (adults and juveniles) if necessary.

Deputy Probation Officer III

Provides lead direction and work coordination for other Department staff; may coordinate scheduling of staff for requisite training, may ensure training requirements are met; carries an assigned caseload of adult or juvenile offenders; may serve as intake officer in determining if a juvenile petition should be filed; interviews adult or juveniles, their families and interested individuals to determine the nature of their environmental, employment, financial or marital status; does crisis counseling as required; conducts pre-sentence investigations; conducts home visits as necessary; formulates plans of probation; presents written or oral recommendations to the court; monitors offender behavior to determine compliance with conditions of probation; prepares Affidavits of Probation violations; conducts search and seizure of person, property and/or vehicles; conducts individual and group counseling; may prepare civil cases; advises clients of available community resources; may serve as placement officer, schedules placement visits; and evaluates psychological reports and makes assessments for appropriate placement of minors; prepares treatment plans on each placement; works with placement agency regarding on final results; acts as on-call officer for juvenile problems; transports individuals when necessary; composes and dictates petitions, correspondence, and case histories; prepares and maintains court records and reports; cooperates with State and local welfare, mental health, and law enforcement agencies in cases of mutual interest.

Essential Qualifications:

Deputy Probation Officer I

Knowledge of:

  • Federal, and State laws relating to probation work.
  • Objectives, principles, and methods including individual and group behavior.
  • Psychology as applied to both juvenile and adult offenders.
  • Community, public and private agencies available for the probationer.

Ability to:

  • Learn the principles of adult and juvenile probation work and of related court procedures.
  • Learn the provisions of the Penal, Welfare and Institutions, Education, Vehicle, and Health and Safety Codes.
  • Analyze investigation material and make proper deductions.
  • Interview clients and elicit necessary information.
  • Prepare and present effective written and oral reports.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with probationers and others.
  • Work cooperatively with peace officers and related social services agencies.
  • Operate various equipment such as typewriter and computer keyboard.
  • Make oral presentations and training before groups.
  • Prepare, review, and analyze data.

Deputy Probation Officer II

TYPICAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; normal manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; lift and move object weighing up to 25 pounds; sufficient physical ability and strength to defend self and deal with violent/aggressive individuals; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computers, telephones, calculators, copiers, and FAX.

Work is performed in an office and in the field environment; continuous contact with staff and the public.

Training and Experience:

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Deputy Probation Officer I

Education

Graduation from an accredited four-year college with a major in criminology, sociology, psychology, social work or closely related field.

Experience

Some previous work experience in a probation related field is highly desirable.

Deputy Probation Officer II

Education

Graduation from college with a major in criminology, sociology, psychology, social work or closely related field.

Experience

Eighteen months (18 months) of professional probation work experience comparable to that of a Deputy Probation Officer I with Amador County.

Deputy Probation Officer III

Education

Graduation from college with a major in criminology, sociology, psychology, social work or closely related field.

Experience

Two (2) years of professional probation work experience comparable to that of a Deputy Probation Officer II with Amador County.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Possession of a valid California Driver’s License issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles.
  • Ability to complete the Basic Probation Officer Core Course as certified by the Board of State and Community Corrections for Deputy Probation Officer Core Training, and continued compliance with annual training requirements.
  • Possession of CPR /First Aid Certificate.
  • Ability to qualify for training and background which will meet the requirements of California Government Code Sections 1029 and 1031.
