Position Overview: The Deputy Nursery Manager will play a key role in supporting the overall operation of the nursery, working closely with the Nursery Manager to ensure the highest standards of care and education are maintained. This is a hands-on leadership role, where the Deputy Manager will take responsibility for managing a small, dedicated team of staff and helping to create a nurturing and welcoming environment for both children and their families.
As a Deputy Manager, you will be expected to be a positive role model, leading by example and maintaining a child-centred approach in everything you do. You will be actively involved in the day-to-day running of the nursery, ensuring that all children receive the best care and education, whilst also supporting the professional development of your team. Your leadership will help ensure the nursery operates smoothly and is compliant with all regulatory standards and policies.
Key Responsibilities:- Leadership and Management:
- Support the Nursery Manager in the day-to-day running of the nursery.
- Supervise and mentor a small team of staff, providing guidance and support as needed.
- Assist in the recruitment, training, and development of nursery staff.
- Lead by example, maintaining a positive, child-focused and inclusive atmosphere at all times.
- Take charge of the nursery in the absence of the Nursery Manager, ensuring smooth operations.
- Childcare and Education:
- Ensure the welfare, safety and happiness of all children attending the nursery.
- Support the development and implementation of the nursery's curriculum, ensuring it meets the individual needs of each child.
- Assist in planning and delivering age-appropriate activities that support children's development across all areas, including communication, social skills, physical development and emotional well-being.
- Observe, assess and record children's progress and share relevant information with parents and carers.
- Promote and implement safeguarding policies, ensuring a safe and secure environment for all children.
- Staff Development and Support:
- Provide guidance and support to nursery staff, offering advice on best practices and professional development opportunities.
- Monitor staff performance and support regular team meetings and one-on-one supervision sessions.
- Encourage a collaborative team spirit and contribute to a positive working environment.
- Ensure that staff are kept up to date with relevant training, including safeguarding and first aid.
- Administrative Duties:
- Assist with the management of children s records, including attendance, medical needs and any specific care plans.
- Ensure all paperwork and documentation is kept up to date and compliant with regulatory requirements.
- Support the Nursery Manager in managing nursery budgets, ordering supplies and maintaining resources.
- Help with the implementation of policies and procedures to ensure the nursery adheres to all legal and regulatory standards (e.g. Ofsted, EYFS, Health & Safety).
- Parent and Community Engagement:
- Build strong, positive relationships with parents and carers, offering regular updates on their child s development and wellbeing.
- Encourage parental involvement in nursery activities and events, creating a welcoming environment for families.
- Act as a point of contact for parents, addressing any concerns or queries in a professional and empathetic manner.
Key Skills and Qualifications:- Essential:
- A recognised childcare qualification, at least Level 3 (or equivalent), in Early Years Education or Childcare.
- Significant experience working in an early years setting, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or leadership role.
- Strong knowledge of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework and safeguarding practices.
- Excellent leadership and management skills, with the ability to motivate and support a team.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with children, staff and parents.
- A commitment to creating a nurturing, homely environment where children feel safe, happy and valued.
- Desirable:
- Previous experience as a Deputy Manager or Room Leader.
- Paediatric First Aid and Safeguarding training (or a willingness to update qualifications).
- Knowledge of regulatory frameworks such as Ofsted and EYFS compliance.
- Experience with staff training, performance management, and recruitment processes.
