Job description

Pensions Ombudsman

Deputy Chief Operating Officer (Corporate Services)

Salary: from £74,634

Location: London, with some home working

The Pensions Ombudsman for the United Kingdom was founded to resolve complaints and disputes related to private pensions. As a totally independent body, not part of the pensions industry or government, we investigate and make decisions when someone has been unable to resolve a complaint about how their pension has been managed. Our service is free, but we have legal powers to make decisions that are final, binding, and enforceable in court.

Our work can be challenging and high-profile, delivering a fair outcome for the individual and highlighting where the pensions industry can improve. Focusing on the facts, we must be balanced, fair and totally independent. We have grown rapidly in recent years and now employ over 160 staff. We receive around 9000 enquiries and 7000 pension complaints each year, and a number of these are resolved without the need for a full Ombudsman determination.

As a key figure within the overall leadership of the Pensions Ombudsman, you will be responsible for the full range of our corporate services portfolio and strategic cross-cutting projects and initiatives. You will have operational oversight of key enabling functions including finance, HR, communications, governance, stakeholder engagement, programme delivery, digital, insights, and technology. Ensuring that our teams are set up with the right balance between specialist knowledge and expertise for certain tasks while increasing the transferability of others to respond with resilience and flexibility in delivering these services will be key to success as we seek to continue a journey of transformation and improvement.

Reporting to, and working closely with our Chief Operating Officer, you must be an experienced senior leader with the proven ability to lead and transform a broad portfolio of corporate enabling services within a comparably complex organisation. You will be an excellent communicator able to develop successful engagement that wins the confidence and credibility of a broad range of stakeholders. You must be comfortable working in a fluid and often ambiguous environment and possess the insight to be able to handle complex, sensitive situations in a calm and focused way. Your approach is collegiate, with a vision for and ability to deliver continuous improvement and transformation.

This offers a chance to provide critical services to consumers in their time of need. With generous flexible and home working policies, and an engaged and motivated team, we can provide the platform you need to deliver exceptional results.
