Job description

Overview

We are looking for a Depot Safety Manager (DSM) at Melton Rail Innovation & Development Centre to join our test centre for new rail vehicles to ensure they are safe to go on the mainline where testing is carried out within the safe confines of a test track of up to 13 miles.

The DSM will ensure safe operation of RIDC Melton, depot operations in accordance with the Safety Management System, whilst acting at the request of the client to achieve all programme activities without compromising safety. The DSM role is to act as a liaison with customers to understand their plans, depot requirements and working practices and to carry these out with due regard to the RIDC SMS. You will ensure that all are working safely, enforcing good work practices and behaviours where required.

Working Pattern: Mon to Sat 40 hours on a rolling 7-week shift pattern with occasional Sundays/nights (as overtime).

Responsibilities

As part of the GBRf RIDC Operations team, you will assist in the provision of clear safety direction to all workforces at the RIDC. This includes other GBRf Operational Safety Managers, the Network Rail Client team, Customer rolling stock and infrastructure OEM teams and Contractor maintenance staff and others.

You will observe, act and report any issues which have the potential to degrade operations, safety or security, whilst understanding and abiding by the RIDC Safety Management System procedures, advising on Continuous Improvement.

Unloading/loading customer vehicles, setting up safe systems of work for customers/contractors, undertaking OLE isolations and shunting and coupling trains will be part of the daily duties.

You will act as the Designated Person responsible for Protection (DPP), Authorised person (HV Electrical) and Fire warden within this role.

Qualifications

To be considered for this role you must be medically fit for train driving duties and live within 45 minutes of Melton Mowbray. A driving licence is essential.

You must be a Safety focussed individual with the following skills and experience:

  • Basic rail knowledge preferable
  • Traction knowledge
  • Engineering experience preferred
  • Experience of FLT, Overhead crane/Lifting Jacks, PASMA desirable
  • Good communication skills essential
  • Flexible approach to work patterns
  • Commuting distance within 45 minutes of Melton Mowbray
