Job description

We are seeking to recruit a suitably qualified Dental Equipment Engineering Technician to provide a repair and maintenance service for dental and associated equipment at Leeds Dental Institute along with its outreach clinics.

Applicants must hold a recognised qualification in electrical or mechanical engineering. Experience in the repair and maintenance of ADEC, Planmeca, Kavo, Cattani, Durr and/or other major brands of dental equipment would be desirable.

You must be self-motivated with the ability to work under pressure and to prioritise a busy workload. You will need to be competent to work on medical equipment unsupervised and sensitive to working in a clinical environment. A sound knowledge of safe working practices is essential as is a commitment to providing a quality service, good communication skills and an enthusiasm for ongoing personal and professional development.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will maintain a broad range of equipment carrying out planned preventative maintenance, fault diagnosis and repair. This includes dental surgery units and ancillary dental equipment including dental vacuum plant. In addition, the post holder will be expected to liaise with the University of Leeds Estates Department for the repair and maintenance of the building fabric within the Dental Hospital.

Support and encouragement for personal and professional development will be given with potential where possible to undertake further qualifications relevant to the post.

2. JOB PURPOSE/SUMMARY

As part of the Dental engineering team based at Leeds Dental Institute:

To maintain and repair, test and calibrate dental and associated equipment in the Leeds Dental Institute and satellite clinics. Notably this includes planned preventative maintenance on around 150 dental units/chairs each year.

To assist in the upkeep of the services and fabric of the portion of the building that the LDI is responsible for. This includes liaison with members of staff and the University Estates department to upgrade or repair services and facilities.

To provide occasional instruction to dental staff and students at the LDI on the appropriate safe operation of equipment, commensurate to the expertise and experience of the post holder.

4. PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

  1. Support the work of the Dental Workshop in the effective and timely maintenance, repair, testing and calibration of fixed and portable dental equipment.
  2. Undertake Planned Preventative Maintenance on selected items of equipment.
  3. Carry out commissioning and acceptance testing on new medical equipment.
  4. To liaise with members of staff and the University Estates Department to upgrade or repair services and facilities.
  5. Organise own work schedule to ensure all allocated work is prioritised and completed in advance of agreed deadlines.
  6. Ensure the equipment used in the Dental Workshop is in safe working order and by undertaking routine cleaning and maintenance of workshop equipment when necessary.
  7. To maintain and update records of equipment maintenance on the appropriate equipment inventory/s including on the Medical Physics Inventory database Equip.
  8. Identify and specify spare parts and accessories to be ordered for own work and in the absence of or in support of the Lead Technician to create purchase requisitions for required products.
  9. Maintain and develop skills and knowledge necessary for the job by:
  10. Completion of appropriate training on a timely basis including all mandatory training and other essential training as identified by the Lead Technician or Service Manager.
  11. Participation in regular appraisals.
  12. Attend appropriate departmental meetings as required.
  13. To provide occasional instruction to dental staff and students at the LDI on the appropriate safe operation of equipment, commensurate to the expertise and experience of the post holder.
  14. To follow all health & safety policies, protocols and risk assessments relevant to the Dental Workshop and to the department or work area in which Dental Engineering services are being provided at any time.
  15. Any other duties commensurate with the grade.

Skills & behaviours

  • Ability to work under pressure and to prioritise work, Self-motivation and ability to work to deadlines.

Experience

  • Relevant post qualification experience in an engineering environment.
  • Competent in the repair and maintenance of a broad range of dental/technical equipment.
  • Highly specialised knowledge of a wide range of mechanical/electrical procedures.
  • Understanding of HTM2010.
  • Safety procedures and infection control.
  • Maintenance and repair of dental or medical equipment.
  • Knowledge of dental hand pieces and motors.
  • Waterline Safety.
  • Good working knowledge of IT including office software.
  • Experience in using Equip Medical Physics equipment database.

Qualifications

  • Graduate level or equivalent qualification in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
  • (May consider ONC/OND/HND etc if combined with demonstrable graduate level experience & training).
  • Evidence of appropriate continuous professional development.
  • Electrical Safety Testing, Portable Appliance Testing.
