Join our Blockchain team!

The Workshop is a tech company that develops intuitive software for the online gaming industry. Our motto is to move “Fearlessly Forward” together. Cooperative innovation is at the center of everything we do – from our games, new products and technologies to how we collaborate and share inspiration with one another.

Our blockchain team is dedicated to the conception, design, and implementation of a best-in-class software platform providing our users with the ability to work seamlessly within this new and highly technical space. We are currently seeking new colleagues across a variety of roles who are passionate about bringing this world-changing technology into mainstream use via the development of high-quality tools and services aimed at the wider commercial market.

Previous blockchain experience, while desirable, is not required, and so this is an excellent opportunity for anybody who has an interest in growing their skills and experience in this novel and fast-moving field.

Your mission

As a Database Engineer, you will administer our database platforms to ensure they remain online, secure, right-sized, and have appropriate HADR solutions. This includes supporting blockchain payments and analytics-based systems built on MongoDB, Cassandra, and Elasticsearch hosted in both public and private clouds.

You will manage databases across multiple data centers and cloud environments, automating routine tasks like patching and configuration management to free up time for more strategic engineering-related initiatives.

What you'll do

  • You will support our development lifecycle through feasibility, design, and delivery to ensure the solutions we provide are automated, robust, scalable, maintainable, and secure.
  • You will promote and collaborate in the creation of solutions to drive automation, environment consistency, continuous delivery with an 'everything as code' mentality.
  • When appropriate, you will lead on complex database tasks such as Information Lifecycle Management (ILM), very large table modifications, advanced query tuning, and data migrations.
  • Use your training budget and work time to keep up to date and sometimes drive industry data platform trends and technology adoption.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, application development teams, and business stakeholders.
  • Cross-train peers in database development and administration. They will do the same for you.
  • Provide out-of-hours production support as part of a 24/7 rota.

What you'll bring

  • At least 2 years’ experience working as a Database Engineer supporting MongoDB and/or Cassandra in a Production Environment. Experience supporting Elasticsearch is desirable but not a pre-requisite.
  • Public cloud experience using OpenStack, GCP, or AWS.
  • A DevOps/automation-first mindset, with experience using deployments with Ansible (or similar automation tool for config/admin).
  • Practical experience of the following using scripting languages or programming frameworks (Python, Bash, Java, etc.).
  • System administration and tuning of Linux-based servers.
  • Strong working knowledge and experience using code versioning tools like Git.
  • Experience configuring and using CI/CD Tools (AWX/Gitlab/ArgoCD).
  • Knowledge of containerization (Docker/Kubernetes) concepts.
  • Experience supporting data warehousing (ODS/OLAP) technologies like Clickhouse, GCP BigQuery, or DuckDB is desirable but not a pre-requisite.
  • Willingness to work as part of a 24/7 on-call rota.
  • A team player mindset with the ability to work autonomously in a dynamic environment and willing to take multiple initiatives forward at the same time.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making skills.
