Data Science Team Lead

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced developer to join our Systems business and help to lead the definition and delivery of our Maritime Surveillance and Fisheries Monitoring solutions.

Role Overview

We are looking for someone to lead, line manage and grow a small team of two mid-level Data Scientists to bring wider experience and direction to the team. You will assist the Product team by leading on ideas - what is and is not possible, pushing on wider architectural requirements to support the data science growth in capability.

Responsibilities

• Manage data science and ML projects through research, feasibility and viability to production.
• Leadership and coaching of our data science team, fostering a culture of learning and development in line with SRT values.
• Collaborate with Product Management to refine data science roadmap.
• Propose novel data science and ML solutions that add value to our maritime domain awareness solutions.
• Lead the design, development, and deployment of geospatial machine learning models to extract value from large geospatial datasets.
• Establish process, best practice and reporting to help communicate data science team project status.
• Research trends and advancements in AI, data science and ML, and use this knowledge to drive innovation within the team.
• Serve as the subject matter expert for data science and ML in support of strategic product decisions and in evaluation of customer requests.

Requirements

• Experience leading, developing and growing a team of Data Scientists, Data Engineers and Machine Learning Engineers.
• Demonstrably ready to step into a first team lead position.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and able to drive projects to completion under tight timelines.
• Experience in the development, training and deployment of custom ML models.
• Expertise in Python and data science libraries.
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts to non-technical audiences.
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, etc.) and MLOps best practice.
• Experience working with GIS and positional data sets.
• Familiarity with deep learning frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch) is a plus.
• Knowledge of satellite imagery analysis and other remote sensing techniques would be a bonus.
• Computer vision experience would be a bonus.

Location

• At least 1 day a week in our Cardiff office.
• Occasional travel to our Midsomer Norton office.
