Role Requirements:

The Data Reliability Engineer (DRE) is responsible for ensuring the smooth running of all databases within the DevOps team. This role includes the build and operation of large-scale, fault-tolerant databases that meet performance objectives and service level agreements (SLAs). The DRE will work closely with cross-functional teams to support production and non-production environments, ensuring high availability and reliability of databases.

Key Accountabilities:

  1. Install, configure, manage, and tune databases for optimal performance.
  2. Perform regular housekeeping activities and proactively identify potential issues.
  3. Be a key squad member in troubleshooting and resolving database-related issues.
  4. Support production and non-production databases, ensuring SLAs, RTO, and RPO objectives are met.
  5. Define and implement DRE standards, best practices, and strategies.
  6. Identify and execute database patching and upgrade needs across the database estate.
  7. Optimize service availability and reliability through performance tuning and implementation of best practices.
  8. Deliver solutions that ensure resilience, scalability, and future-proofing of services.
  9. Build, maintain, and update operational runbooks for all database systems.
  10. Automate the provisioning of databases and schemas through scripting in alignment with infrastructure-as-code.
  11. Set up, maintain, and monitor database performance using tools like AppDynamics and CloudWatch.

Key Skills:

  1. Proven experience with databases in cloud environments, particularly AWS.
  2. Strong experience with Oracle databases on RDS and PostgreSQL.
  3. Oracle DBA experience with Oracle running on EC2 is a plus.
  4. Solid knowledge of data backup, recovery, security, and integrity practices.
  5. Proficient in SQL and database tuning for performance optimization.
  6. Familiarity with monitoring tools such as AppDynamics and CloudWatch.
  7. Experience working in an Agile environment and handling regulated data.
  8. Ability to deliver in high-pressure environments while adhering to SLAs.
  9. AWS Certified Database - Specialty (preferable but not essential).
