Data Forensics Investigator

Location: Ferndown Police Station

Salary: Starts at GBP38,754 rising by yearly increments to a maximum of GBP42,897 per annum

Salary Information: The above salary is based on a full time (37 hour) salary. If you are successful in a part time role this will be pro-rata'd to reflect your working hours.

The Role

To provide SW Regional Forces with an evidential Data Investigation capability. Responsibilities include:

  1. Managing the technical investigation including securing and retrieving data from seized computer systems.
  2. Configuring operating systems and applications, attending searches when necessary.
  3. Producing technical documentation related to data retrieved from computers and media.
  4. Presenting evidence in court as required and advising police officers on forensic computer analysis to assist in the investigation of Hi-Tech crime.
  5. Ensuring integrity and continuity of evidence for judicial proceedings.

Skills and Qualifications

Essential:

  • Educated to degree level in computing science with relevant workplace experience and/or possess extensive investigatory experience.
  • Technical knowledge of dismantling and re-assembly of computer systems, knowledge of file systems and architecture.
  • Must hold a UK drivers licence unless prevented by reason of disability. Reasonable adjustments will be considered.
  • Experience in a range of Operating Systems including DOS, Microsoft, Macintosh, Linux and BIOS & CMOS.
  • Knowledge of legislation in relation to Hi-Tech Crime including RIPA, Computer Misuse Act, Criminal Justice Act, Data Protection Act and ACPO Guidelines for Computer Based Evidence.
  • Proven ability to communicate complex ideas and information both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to use information methodically to identify and analyze problems and draw logical conclusions.
  • Ability to display tenacity in investigative work and make sound decisions.
  • Ability to work in stressful situations, including viewing offensive and distressing content.
  • Ability to retrieve, record, prepare, and present evidence to a Court.

Desirable:

  • Experience of giving evidence in court, particularly regarding complex cases at Crown Court.
  • Good knowledge of ACPO guidelines for seizure of exhibits, scene management, and data recovery from mobile devices.
  • Knowledge of Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984.
  • Investigative experience and knowledge of statutes, police powers, and definitions of criminal offences.
