Cyber Security Higher Apprentice - Blyth

National Grid Interconnectors is at the heart of the UK’s transition to our net zero energy future, operating a number of HVDC interconnectors that connect the UK’s energy system to some of our closest neighbours, allowing energy to be imported to and exported from the UK. As well as already owning a portfolio of HVDC Interconnectors, we’re working on developing new projects to ensure that we can meet the UK’s future demands for greener energy solutions.

Our Operations Cyber Security team are responsible for ensuring safe and efficient operational running of the HVDC Interconnectors 24 hours, 365 days per year. They have a critical role in ensuring the highest level of operational performance.

While on the Apprenticeship programme, you will:

  • Apply cyber security system controls to protect systems, information, data & individuals from cyber attack.
  • Help prevent data breaches by creating, implementing and monitoring security systems and features.
  • Maintain security posture of systems to protect assets and comply with regulation.
  • Act as a point of contact and specialist support to key operational teams.
  • Perform regular tasks to ensure the operability and security of key systems – access management, backups, testing etc.
  • Perform technical security assessments, design reviews, and compliance audits.
  • Define, implement, and enforce security policies and best practices.
  • Assist in ensuring systems are secure by design and effectively tested, deployed & maintained.
  • Maintain an understanding of the threat landscape and adapt security response accordingly.
  • Support incident management processes to ensure response is optimal.

This is a hybrid position with your place of work being Blyth, with regular travel to Viking Link Convertor Station (near Grantham) and ad-hoc travel to other Interconnector sites or National Grid offices.

About you

  • You will need to have 5 GCSEs including English Language AND Math at Grade C or above (or equivalent).
  • 2 A levels / A2: Grades A* - C OR equivalent (BTEC National Certificate/Diploma Level 3) at Grade Pass or higher.
  • A good knowledge of IT systems, network infrastructure, and hardware and software systems. Level 3 study would be advantageous.
  • Interest in pursuing a cyber security career that protects engineering projects/sites.
  • Must have or be working towards a full UK driving licence.
