Job description

We are currently looking for a Project Engineer for our client to work on the Sizewell nuclear new build project. This will be a contract role based in London with hybrid working options.


The Project Engineer will be part of the Engineering & Technical function within the Civil Works Programme and report to either the Design Manager or the Engineering & Technical Project Manager. The Project Engineer will work under the direction of either the Design Manager, therefore focusing on technical aspects, or the Engineering & Technical Project Manager focusing on cost and schedule aspects.


Responsibilities

When supporting a Design Manager:

  1. Support the definition or validation of the SZC Technical Requirements and Specification, including engagement with EDF Nuclear Services and SZC Design Authority.
  2. Support the management of technical Open Points and Design Changes. This includes supporting progression through the technical governance processes including Replication Principles, Technical Direction Forum (TDF), No Change Committee (NCC), and Non-Permanent Works Change Committee (NPWCC).
  3. Support the Design Technical Assurance for the end-to-end design and ensuring SZC acceptance can be provided, including reviews and approvals as defined by the surveillance plans.
  4. Support risk management through Risk Management Processes.
  5. Support the Design Manager in technical input for Early Warnings, Compensation Events, Technical Queries, General Communications, etc., from L3 Design Supply Chain, including engagement with relevant SZC and RD technical stakeholders.
  6. Support the coordination on technical interfaces with other parties, for example, Site Establishment and Off-Site Infrastructure NI Programme CIBOP Programme and Sizewell B.
  7. Support compliance with SZC Engineering and Design processes, e.g., Design Management Plans, to deliver the whole lifecycle of the Design, from Technical Requirement capture to EDR.
  8. Collaborate with the team in delivery of design in accordance with the Contract Schedules under their management and linked to the Integrated Work Schedule (IWS).

When Supporting the Engineering & Technical Project Manager:

  1. Support the Engineering & Technical Project Manager in technical input for Early Warnings, Compensation Events, Technical Queries, General Communications, etc., from L3 Design Supply Chain, including engagement with relevant SZC and RD technical stakeholders.
  2. Support in the activities to manage the Engineering and Technical budget in their specific scope area.
  3. Support the updates to the schedule of the Engineering & Technical scope in their specific scope area, working with the Engineering & Technical schedulers.
  4. Support the Engineering & Technical Project Manager in the management of [L3] Design Supply Chain Contracts.
  5. Coordinate with Civil Works Alliance and the other programmes (NI, CIBOP, SEOI) as directed by the Engineering & Technical Project Manager.

Scope Areas

The Engineering & Technical function includes several technical areas. The purpose of this role is to support either the Design Manager or the Engineering & Technical Project Manager within one of the following scope areas:

  1. Enabling Works & Earthworks
  2. Marine & Tunnelling
  3. Nuclear Island
  4. CI-BOP-Heat Sink
  5. Ancillary Works (Permanent Roads & Networks and Ancillary Buildings)

Stakeholder Engagement

To perform their duties and responsibilities, the Project Engineer will engage with several stakeholders such as:

  1. SZC Civil Works Programme
  2. Site Establishment and Off-Site Infrastructure
  3. NI and CIBOP Programmes
  4. MEH Alliance

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience

Essential

  1. Knowledge of design activities in:
  • Heavy civil engineering structures, including reinforced concrete and structural steel, and familiarity with current design standards and working practices (e.g., British Standards).
  • External works, including drainage, utilities, paved and unpaved surfaces, earthworks, access and accessibility, construction logistics, and familiarity with current UK design standards and working practices.
  • Managing designs and teams, including integration, design, and delivery management.
  • Experience in, and a desire to provide, technical assistance and collaboration within a technically oriented delivery team.
  • Experience of working with focused technical teams including technical direction of suppliers.
  • Experience of working in project teams.
  • Ability to communicate and engage effectively within the project team and, if required, across a range of levels: Management Team, SZC stakeholders, design delivery teams, Design Authority, Regulators, etc.

  • Desirable

    1. Experience in the nuclear sector, particularly in the design and implementation of safety-related structures, systems, and components.

    Would suit a graduate with 1-2 years experience.


    This is a contract role to run for 12 months but could be longer. The role falls Inside IR35.
