Job Description

The Customs Manager role offers a remote schedule; it will be required to come to the Distribution Centre located at Westway, Street BA16 0LN once a month.

Job Summary:

As an established and respected industry player, Clarks is seeking a Customs and Trade Compliance Manager to enhance their global compliance efforts. In this key role, you will own all aspects of ensuring the company’s compliance with global trade regulations and customs procedures, driving efficiency and minimizing risk. You will collaborate with diverse stakeholders, from government agencies to internal teams, driving process improvements, stakeholder awareness and the identification of opportunities to reduce duty impact and/or improve service levels. In this position, your contributions will have a significant impact on the operational excellence Clarks achieves and the compliance strategy followed.

Responsibilities:

  • Own Clarks Customs strategy, ensuring compliance with all relevant laws and regulations related to Customs and trade compliance.
  • Remain up to date with changes in Customs regulations and ensure Clarks operations are compliant.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to develop strategies for improving Customs compliance.
  • Manage relationships with Customs authorities and external partners to ensure compliance with all customs requirements.
  • Own and drive Clarks compliance program activities and Customs authorisations (Customs Freight Simplified Procedures (CFSP), Authorised Economic Operator - Customs Simplifications (AEO-C), Customs Warehouse status, Customs Guarantee, Customs Procedure Code (CPC)).
  • Assign and review global Harmonized Tariff Codes (HTS). Update and review SAP master data, Global Classification solution and customs broker regular database updates.
  • Evaluate, investigate and mitigate potential customs and trade compliance risks.
  • Develop and maintain Trade Compliance KPIs to measure and monitor service provider performance, broker scorecards, compliance trends and risk assessment – trade data analysis.
  • Resolve issues and contribute to company performance by responding to changing product developments, manufacturing network changes and distribution needs.
  • Lead and facilitate customs-related projects, ensuring timely and effective implementation.

Stakeholders:

  • Internal – Supply Chain, Sourcing, Warehousing, Marketing, Sales, Legal, Quality, Finance, Tax, Regulatory and other contacts as needed. Wide scope of global contacts at different levels of seniority within the organization.
  • External – Customs Brokers, Freight Forwarders, Government Agencies, Industry consultants and specialists, Customers, Suppliers, Contract Manufacturers.

Experience and Qualifications:

Our successful candidate will demonstrate commitment to excellence, integrity, and the willingness to take ownership and accountability for results. We are looking for a self-starter who enjoys partnering across the organization, working with government agencies, learning new things, with the ability to research new areas of customs and trade compliance to support the organization, and someone who has a “roll-up your sleeves” attitude.

  • 5-7 years of experience in Customs and Trade Compliance.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate to a diverse audience, at multiple levels using a variety of formats, presentations, emails, leading meetings, face to face, etc.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to define a strategy and translate it into actionable plans and then manage these plans through to implementation.
  • Able to promote and foster new ideas and strategies among internal and external parties.
  • Good working knowledge of SAP transactions and reports.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook).
  • Ability to manage ambiguity whilst working to tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in groups with some manager direction, oversight, and guidance.
  • Ability to research and self-educate in new or unfamiliar areas of global trade compliance needs.
