Curlew Connections : Communities And Engagement Officer

Location : Brecon

Salary: A GBP 30,060 : A GBP 32,654 pro rata

Contract : Fixed term : 24 weeks

Hours : 14.8 hours per week

The Role

The Curlew Connections Communities and Engagement Officer will re:connect people with curlews in the Welsh landscape and inspire them to help them in their ambitions for reversing their rapid population decline.

You will broaden the appeal of curlews and encourage a diverse range of people to gain a greater understanding of their plight, and love for, curlews in their landscape.

They want to recruit someone who is passionate about promoting understanding and awareness of the curlew, in particular the conservation of breeding curlews.

You will work closely with the Curlew and People Officer in Bannau Brycheiniog National Park to influence increased appreciation of the curlew and its breeding requirements. A core element of the brief is to inspire and enable a range of audiences including the farming community, young people, the older generation and a range of communities to build a high level of local support for breeding curlews.

Key Responsibilities

To assist the Curlew and People Officer, Bannau Brycheiniog National Park staff, and colleagues within the Curlew Connections Wales project to deliver engagement activities which builds a greater understanding and appreciation of curlew recovery as described in a Project Engagement Plan. Target audiences have been identified, including the farming community, local and national communities, recording groups, schools and colleges and the elderly community.

Tasks Will Include:
  • Bringing the stories of the curlew to life through innovative events and experiences that inspire communities.
  • Working directly with the farming and land managing community to identify Curlew Champions and foster good practice.
  • Organisation of dynamic interpretive events and creation of materials, drawing on the current material of Gylfinir Cymru.
  • Provision of education and learning opportunities for primary and secondary aged pupils and other youth groups, particularly agricultural colleges and Young Farmers Clubs.
  • Organising a celebration of Curlew celebration events through a variety of mediums and across a wide range of communities.
  • Identification of new and collaborative ways of working across communities Development of a programme to ensure more people and a wider range of people become involved with curlew recovery. Including:
  • National and local citizen science programmes.
  • New volunteering opportunities and training for rural communities close to current curlew populations.
  • A range of inclusive activities for target audiences including for older people, and specific local activities for organisations with an older age profile e.g. the Womens Institute, U3A.
  • Development of inter-generational projects within communities e.g., oral history records of memories of curlew in farming communities undertaken by the younger generations.
  • Utilising best practice to develop methods of communicating with their target audiences that will lead to meaningful engagement and drive change that is focussed on outputs and impacts.
  • Managing multiple projects and working with a range of contractors including translators, illustrators, designers, artists, creative agencies and goods providers.
As part of this work, it is expected you will attend meetings with the project partners and the project delivery team on a regular basis to share ideas and play a role in the delivery of curlew recovery in Wales.

Skills And Qualifications
