Job description

The ENT fellow is an active member of the team with responsibility for day to day care of ENT patients under supervision of registrars and consultants. Active participation in regular outpatient and inpatient work, including emergency duty, is expected and forms an essential part of training. Self-directed learning is encouraged with use of the wide range of educational opportunities available.


Theatre attendance is encouraged as well as observing specialist clinics and working with fellow non-medical professionals. Dedicated theatre teaching sessions are to be provided for this specific post, pending the competence and interest of the successful candidate.


After hours’ emergency and ward cover is provided through a 1 in 6 full shift working arrangement compliant with EWTD.


The fellow will be expected to deliver and enhance specialty specific and generic teaching of undergraduate medical students from Stage 1 to Stage 5 across all trust sites. They will be involved in mentoring students, undergraduate examinations and in course assessments. They will develop teaching skills from attendance at staff development courses.


The post holder is expected to work flexibly across the academic year to ensure adequate progress in both main areas of activity. A flexible job plan will be agreed upon appointment in discussion with the clinical lead for the role.


This post offers a good opportunity for an enthusiastic candidate aiming to secure a higher surgical training post in Otolaryngology. The post is whole time, and operates a first on-call for ENT on a shared rota with General Surgery/vascular/urology (nights only).


The clinical element of the post constitutes joining the Core Surgical Training (CST) tier of trainees in contributing to the clinical workload, including the daily ward round and emergency clinics. The post offers opportunities to develop experience in all aspects of the specialty in a well-supported and closely supervised environment.


The ENT department is centrally based within a modern purpose-built facility in the James Cook University Hospital, with a peripheral service network across the area. Recently rated as one of the best in the country for patient safety the Trust is one of the largest Foundation Trusts in England. Working in the North East offers an excellent quality of life. This area boasts great transport links with easy access to a beautiful coastline/countryside and a great range of local amenities, shopping and nightlife.


The department has an established Otorhinolaryngology service with other comprehensive subspecialised constituents, including being the MDT host and local centre for Head and Neck Cancer Surgery across the Tees Valley and North Yorkshire region, Children’s ENT, Rhinology and endoscopic sinus surgery with balloon sinoplasty, and Otology and skull-base with a full implant service, including cochlear and middle ear implants. Other specialist services in the department include adult voice, joint paediatric tracheostomy, voice and swallow, and a comprehensive tertiary head and neck dystonia service, offering botulinum toxin treatment.
