The successful candidate will rotate through both CT and MRI. The department operates a 24-hour shift system providing CT, MRI and conventional imaging after appropriate training. CPD is actively supported. We currently have two GE CT scanners and two GE MRI scanners based in Raigmore.

Candidates must hold HPC Registration
BSc in Radiography/DCR Diploma of College of Radiographers
2 years post graduate Radiographic experience
Up to date knowledge of general radiography imaging modalities
Portfolio evidence of CPD.

Duties to include:

  • Maintain a high level of expertise in the safe operation of Radiology imaging equipment and manage faults effectively as per departmental fault reporting procedure.
  • Act appropriately under IR(ME)R 2000 regulations, having a full working knowledge of the detail of the regulations and understanding the delegated scope of practice according to NHS Highland employers level 2 procedures. Observe local rules relating to radiation safety under IR99 regulations.
  • Understand and comply at all times with the ALARA principle, to minimise patient radiation dose.
  • Work as part of a team to ensure effective communication and delivery of care, liaising with fellow healthcare workers and referring clinicians to provide a high-quality imaging service to patients.
  • Assess requests for imaging such that the appropriate surface coil is used to optimize image quality to the part of the body under investigation. Adapt or manipulate the scan parameters to acquire the optimum diagnostic study for each patient. Recognise characteristics of normal and abnormal tissues and structures which may require further imaging or alteration of imaging technique.
  • Independently analyse image quality following the examination so that a comprehensive diagnostic outcome is achieved in order to aid patient management and expedite treatment.
  • Understand how to adjust and instruct cross-sectional and conventional imaging team members how and why to adapt imaging techniques to optimise image and diagnostic quality as directed by the supervising radiologist.
  • Advise clinicians regarding clinical suitability of their patient for radiographic imaging and analyse and understand this information in order to modify established protocols to optimise the examination and develop a plan for the diagnostic procedure.
  • Available as a point of contact for users of the service dealing with colleagues, patients, carers and relatives in a helpful, reassuring and friendly manner.
  • Prioritize workload depending on the severity of a patient condition and the direct impact on their management and organize radiographer cover as appropriate.
  • Know how and when to call for assistance in the event of an emergency. Be trained and able to assist in emergency patient care, including resuscitation.
  • Maintain patient records by inputting accurate information to reflect the service provided and meet professional standards, following NHS Highland Radiology Policy relating to data archiving, image storage and retrieval.
  • Undertake IV cannulation and injection, following the required training and assessment of competence.
  • Ensure safe usage of injector pump, for the injection of contrast media.
  • Develop and maintain the required knowledge and skills to provide independent working and effective training, keeping up to date with current advances in technology and diagnostic techniques, in accordance with the departmental competency framework.
  • Ensure safe and efficient use of equipment, taking action to resolve faults, following the fault reporting procedure. Communicate with equipment suppliers regarding attendance of an engineer in the event of equipment faults, determining the impact on the workload of the equipment failure.
  • Due to the remote and rural geography of NHS Highland, it is a requirement of this position to be instructed how to troubleshoot faults via the telephone, directly with an engineer.
  • Report any untoward incidents as appropriate, according to departmental protocols.
  • Be actively involved in the training and assessment of student radiographers on clinical placement in the department, providing supervision at all times.
  • Maintain a clean and safe working environment for both patients and staff in accordance with appropriate NHS Highland infection control procedures and be aware of general x-ray imaging specific infection control protocols.
  • Promote excellence in clinical practice through continuing education, sharing techniques and developments with other centres. Participate in research and development activities and audit initiatives as appropriate.
  • Facilitate changes in clinical practice based on reflective learning and the introduction of new knowledge to clinical practice following discussion and agreement.
  • Act as a point of expertise for imaging referrers from all areas and disciplines in NHS Highland.
  • Maintain a high standard of patient care, attending to the nursing needs of patients as appropriate.
  • Be accountable for own professional actions and act as a role model within the department, setting and maintaining high standards of professionalism and patient care and encouraging the development of a strong and flexible multi-disciplinary team.

NHS Scotland is reducing their full-time working week from 37.5 to 37 hours per week from 1 April 2024 but with no change in pay. This reduction will also be applied pro rata for part-time staff. This advert and any subsequent offer/contract of employment therefore reflects the new working hours. However, as not all service areas will be able to adopt the 37-hour working week immediately from 1 April 2024, you may be required to work up to an additional 30 minutes per week for a temporary period for which you would be paid until the service you are working in changes rosters or working patterns to accommodate the new reduced working week.
