Job description

Purpose of the Role

This Corporate and Business Tax team are now looking for a Corporate Tax Manager to join its exciting and growing department. The right candidate will work alongside both the senior management team and partners, to provide bespoke tax advice to clients.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • The role of a manager in this team offers excellent opportunities to work on a broad range of tax advisory projects and clients to develop the right candidate's overall tax advisory skills.
  • The right candidate can expect to spend around 80% of their working time working closely with the partners and more junior members of the team to deliver tax advice to the firm's clients.
  • The candidate will get full exposure to client facing communication and working on projects all the way from initial engagement through to the legal implementation.
  • The candidate would also be expected to play an important role in the development of their peers and more junior colleagues on a day-to-day basis, both technically and professionally.
  • The candidate would be expected to manage the delivery of advice to the partner for approval, balancing working with more junior resources in the team and reviewing their output, while also being responsible for the preparation and delivery of bespoke advice directly to the partners.
  • The candidate would also have good exposure to working with partners on pitching for new clients both remotely and in person.

The firm’s clients consist largely of OMBs and large corporates, and as such, advisory projects regularly consist of the following matters:

  • Structuring corporate transactions such as s.110 reconstructions, statutory demergers, and company share repurchases, advising clients on the availability of any relevant reliefs, and preparing and delivering the initial advice while frequently collaborating with appointed legal practices to ensure desired tax outcomes.
  • The right candidate would be expected to have and develop a good working knowledge of a variety of taxes to consider the full scope of relevant taxation such as corporation tax, income tax, capital gains tax, VAT, and stamp duty/SDLT in their advice.
  • The candidate would also be required to prepare tax valuations and clearance letters for submission to HMRC in respect of such transactions.
  • Managing full scope tax due diligence projects and liaising with other members of the wider tax team to deliver reports covering corporation tax, PAYE, and VAT (and any other relevant taxes) on such assignments.
  • Advising on employee share incentives such as EMI schemes and preparing the relevant valuation reports for submission to HMRC.
  • Advising on the qualifying conditions for certain tax reliefs such as EIS/SEIS and making advance assurance submissions on behalf of the clients.

A significant amount of their advice is delivered in the form of written reports, and the candidate will be required to both write up technical tax analysis and apply this to the clients' facts clearly and coherently, as well as review work prepared by more junior members of the team to ensure accuracy prior to delivery to the partner.

Although the role is predominantly advisory based, there will be a requirement to assist with the compliance work that falls within the team. This would typically consist of:

  • Reviewing the preparation of more complex corporation tax returns, often for groups, international, or larger clients of the firm.
  • Supporting our General Practice through the review of some annual computations for their audit clients and working closely with them to provide support for technical tax queries that arise from their work and their clients.
  • The ideal candidate should be client-focused with a solid knowledge base and experience of aspects of income tax self-assessment, PAYE, and Corporation Tax compliance procedures to supervise team members dealing with these areas.
  • They should also have an understanding of accountancy principles and be CTA qualified.
