Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

An exciting opportunity has arisen at Moorfields Eye Hospital for a Corneal Fellowship for a fixed term of 12 months.

The successful applicant is required to be registered with the General Medical Council and hold a license to practice. Possession of FRCOphth/MRCOphth or equivalent ophthalmic qualification is necessary. Applicants should be at Specialist Trainee grade or equivalent and be near to/completed their higher specialist training in Ophthalmology.

Candidates are expected to have experience in phacoemulsification Cataract Surgery having completed 250 surgeries with audit evidence of results. The ideal candidate will have to demonstrate the ability to operate independently without supervision.

This role will give the successful applicant the opportunity to gain experience in a world-renowned teaching hospital, with access to the teaching and resources of Moorfields City Road and other Divisions based on the timetable.

This venture will provide the Ophthalmology opportunity to present widely and will provide an excellent level of management experience for future career progression.

Main duties of the job

  • 8 clinical sessions, including 1 or 2 theatre sessions and 2 admin/study sessions. The clinical sessions will include Cornea/cataract clinics and theatres.
  • Clinical sessions will be cross site with opportunities to attend City Road teaching sessions and use the facilities at the City Road site including the Institute of Ophthalmology library.
  • This post includes surgical sessions to allow a Corneal surgeon to develop their skills alongside a consultant ophthalmic surgeon.

Job responsibilities

  • A leading role in specialist and sub-specialist corneal and external eye disease clinics.
  • Active participation in corneal and cataract operating lists.
  • Management of urgent cases presenting at any time during the week.
  • On-call for anterior segment emergencies (1 in 9 week frequency) and general on-call at St Georges Hospital.
  • Leadership role in corneal multi-disciplinary team.
  • Teaching and supervision of junior medical staff and allied health professionals.
  • Participation in formal and informal teaching.
  • Opportunities for undertaking research and audit.

Person Specification

Education

  • MBBS or equivalent
  • GMC Registration with UK license to practise
  • MRCOphth or relevant ophthalmic qualifications
  • Higher Degree (e.g MSc, PhD)

Further Training & Knowledge

  • Corneal related courses

Skills & Abilities

  • Can undertake routine Phakoemulsification unsupervised.
  • Surgical competence - Other Ophthalmic surgery.
  • Previous experience of corneal surgery.

Experience

  • Previous clinical experience in ophthalmology.
  • Emergency ophthalmology experience.
  • Completion of resident training.
  • Evidence of completed audits/Management projects.
  • Experience of teaching juniors.
  • Experience of research.
