Job description

Xtrac is the world’s leading designer and manufacturer of specialist transmissions. Our customers include the top motorsports racing series including Formula One, Le Mans, IndyCar, and NASCAR, and we also supply transmissions for the most exclusive high-performance cars in the world. We are at the forefront of a once-in-a-generation opportunity as the automotive industry transitions from internal combustion to electric and hybrid, and our experienced and dedicated teams are using the latest cutting-edge technology to achieve this transition.

About the Role

Are you looking for an exciting opportunity to work within a world-leading organisation? We’re looking for a Controls Software Engineer to join us as we continue to grow and deliver high-profile projects to both our motorsport and high-performance automotive customers.

Xtrac established its High Performance Mechatronics division to build upon Xtrac’s strong mechanical engineering foundation and create fast, dependable, and engaging performance systems in the most demanding applications, using electronics, software, and calibration developed in-house.

You’ll be managing all elements and phases of software and calibration development projects, from working with our Systems Engineers and customers to understanding requirements, implementing software change, making inputs to mechanical design through reviews with Mechanical Design teams, validating and calibrating on test rigs, and attending on-vehicle testing with the customer. As a result of Xtrac’s ownership of the software, calibration, electrical hardware, and mechanical hardware, you will gain great exposure to a lot of gearbox knowledge and experience, allowing you to build a knowledge base that drives success.

This is a highly collaborative role, requiring close interaction with simulation, mechanical design, electronics, research and development, and systems engineering teams to support the development of ground-breaking technology in the motorsport and high-performance automotive industries.

Your main responsibilities will include:

  1. Delivering embedded software projects in conjunction with internal teams, our customers, and third-party suppliers.
  2. Model-based design in tools such as Simulink or Ascet, or hand-coding in C or Python.
  3. Calibration activities on test rigs or with the customer on-vehicle.
  4. Supporting the customer in the field in international locations.
  5. Supporting hardware tests in-house or at external test facilities.
  6. Developing the toolchain and skill sets within Xtrac.

This is a fast-paced, busy role but offers complete job satisfaction. If you’re looking for a hands-on role, with integration between our internal departments and our customers, and you have a passion for control systems, then this could be the opportunity for you.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  1. A degree in Software, Mechatronics, or an Engineering related field (or equivalent practical experience).
  2. Proven hands-on experience in the development of software and calibration projects, ideally within the automotive or motorsport industries.
  3. Proficiency in software, calibration, and associated management tools or languages such as Simulink, ASCET, C, Python, CANape, INCA, Jira, Polarion, and Git.
  4. Solid knowledge of automotive communication protocols.
  5. Demonstrated ability to analyse and interpret complex data to identify system performance issues.
  6. A good understanding of transmission systems, drivetrain components, and vehicle dynamics, and an understanding of real-time modelling and simulation.
  7. Familiarity with hybrid or electric vehicle systems, including power electronics and battery management systems.
  8. An understanding of safety-critical systems and ISO 26262 compliance.
  9. Knowledge of data acquisition systems and hardware interfaces.
  10. Excellent problem-solving skills with a structured and methodical approach to troubleshooting.
  11. A desire to deliver the best possible product within the constraints set out by the project.
  12. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
  13. A proactive attitude towards continuous improvement and innovation.
  14. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
