Location: West Bromwich

The business I'm working with is looking for an experienced Controls Engineer to serve as the site technical expert on electrical standards and control systems. You will provide technical guidance, hands-on support, and leadership to ensure the site's electrical and control systems meet statutory and company standards. The business is one of the best known in the area and is at the top of their game in the FMCG manufacturing industry, with their products used daily.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Electrical Standards & Compliance:
    • Manage the site's electrical standards to ensure compliance with statutory legislation, company standards, and ECOPS.
    • Serve as the site's Electrical Duty Holder.
    • Conduct audits to ensure adherence to electrical standards and specifications.
    • Oversee the Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) system and establish electrical inspection and testing procedures for all plant equipment.
  2. Project Management & Maintenance:
    • Design, specify, and procure electrical equipment, ensuring technology is up-to-date.
    • Lead installation, modifications, upgrades, commissioning, and development projects.
    • Ensure budget adherence and track project expenditures.
    • Identify critical systems and spares to minimize downtime and ensure rapid recovery after failures.
  3. Technical Expertise:
    • Provide expertise in fault diagnosis and breakdown repairs for plant equipment and services.
    • Maintain and upgrade PLC systems and documentation.
    • Ensure HV and LV switchgear is maintained to ECOPS standards.
    • Document recovery procedures for plant and equipment post-failure.
  4. Training & Leadership:
    • Identify training needs for the electrical team and provide necessary development.
    • Manage and issue electrical authorizations and competency certifications for the engineering team.
    • Conduct briefings for personnel affected by projects.
  5. Safety & Quality Assurance:
    • Ensure electrical safety standards are championed and no electrical accidents occur.
    • Deliver projects aligned with engineering procedures and industry standards (ISO, NTS, BRC).

Required Qualifications and Experience:

Essential:

  • Time-served apprenticeship in electrical engineering. Minimum of 10 years of experience as an electrical engineer.
  • In-depth knowledge of electrical legislation, regulations, and practical applications.
  • Expertise in Permit to Work and Isolation procedures.
  • Experience with PLC programming (Mitsubishi and Allen Bradley preferred). SCADA system experience.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to operate under pressure in a fast-paced environment.

Advantageous:

  • Electrical HND or Degree.
  • Experience in food hygiene standards or baking processes.
  • Knowledge of Continuous Improvement techniques.
  • IOSH certification or equivalent safety qualifications.
