We are seeking an Instrumentation and Control Engineer specialised in ICSS to join a market leading flexible generation IPP. This role is responsible for the design, implementation, and lifecycle management of site communications networks and control systems for a portfolio of existing and new battery storage and gas peaking projects.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Development & Execution
- Support the project team to design, implement, and maintain SCADA, PLC, and SIS systems.
- Develop and refine control system architectures for new projects, ensuring robust and scalable solutions.
- Support functional safety activities, including adherence to BS EN 61508/61511, development of Functional Safety Management Plans, and participation in SIL assessments and safety reviews.
- Participate in HAZOPS, SIL, and LOPA meetings, ensuring the highest standards of safety and compliance.
- Interpret and verify P&ID drawings, ensuring compliance with engineering standards.
- Assist in the development and integration of control solutions for existing projects, optimising operational efficiency.
- Review, manage and maintain technical documentation including I/O schedules, functional design specifications, and design intent documents to ensure alignment with project requirements.
- Development of specifications for control systems for new projects, including both internal and external site communications networks.
- Understanding the requirements of the operations team and incorporating these into new projects and developing controls on existing projects to meet these needs.
Project Execution & Integration
- Collaborate with project teams to develop engineering control solutions.
- Participate in Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) to ensure system quality.
- Competent in Instrumentation and Control requirements for Mechanical packages.
- Support SCADA development projects, coordinating with contractors and ensuring deliverables are met.
- Manage signal list updates, data flow coordination, and network architecture reviews.
- Upgrade existing control systems in line with new services being delivered by company projects.
- Coordinate commissioning of SCADA systems.
- Support the projects, working with multiple contractors, ensuring timely deliverables, and coordinating the integration of SCADA with other systems.
- Coordinate SCADA design and integration between multiple SCADA contractors.
- Manage the interfaces between the systems.
- Ensure quality control of SCADA contractors' works at all times.
- Lead design co-ordination meetings between all contractors responsible for design.
- Participate in training programs for site operatives on control system operations and best practices.
Skills
The Instrumentation and Control Engineer requires the following skills:
- Familiarity with industrial communication protocols such as Modbus and IEC61850.
- Knowledge of controls systems, in particular PLC, SCADA and DCS (with programming and integration capabilities).
- High speed data capture.
- Optimising speed of response of SCADA systems.
- Troubleshooting and diagnostics of control systems.
- Experience of fire and gas detection philosophies and systems would be an advantage.
- IT networking and security.
- Experience working with SCADA and control systems in Power Generation and/or electricity transmission and distribution sector.
Key Personal Characteristics
- Attention to detail.
- Strong communication skills for collaboration with internal teams and external contractors.
- Building relationships with both office-based and site-based teams.
- Ability to work across office and site-based environments, ensuring seamless project execution.
Experience
- 5+ years within a controls environment, ideally with experience in battery energy storage systems and/or ancillary services markets.
- Strong experience working with SCADA and control systems in the power sector and electricity transmission and distribution sector.
Development Opportunities
Working with a dynamic team constructing cutting edge generation plants will provide the successful candidate with extremely relevant real-world project experience. Longer term the successful candidate can expect to work on the delivery of gas peaking and battery projects including the delivery of a large scale integrated hydrogen / gas peaking / battery plant.
Location & Qualifications
- Location: Central London, home office, and UK sites.
- Qualifications: MEng in Electronic Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, or equivalent.
- Memberships: Professional Institution membership (e.g., IET, InstMC) is desirable.
