The Urgent and Emergency Care team, UHND comprises of ED, SDEC and AMU. There have been significant changes to the Front of House with the addition of Same Day Emergency Care and the agreed expansion of the medical workforce which makes us an attractive place to work for anyone who wishes to experience true team work between clinicians, managers and patients.

We are now seeking applications from Consultants in Emergency Medicine to be based at UHND. This is a fantastic opportunity for applicants who can demonstrate a track record of commitment to education.

The main duties of the advertised post will be as follows:
In addition to the main duties listed above if the appointee has trained in Paediatric Emergency Medicine and would be involved in the future development of a front of house Paediatric service.
The post holder will be expected to provide a comprehensive clinical service to consultant colleagues in clinical disciplines in the Hospital and to General Practitioners. Involvement in strategic service planning will be expected, as will exchange of information needed to ensure effective service delivery.
For management purposes and use of resources the post holders will be accountable to the Care Group Clinical Director and will ensure the effective and efficient use of resources allocated.
The appointee will participate in the Emergency Medicine on-call rota as part of a team of consultants.
The appointee will be expected to provide cover when colleagues are on annual and study/professional leave.
Research activities which are considered to be an inherent part of normal clinical duties will be encouraged and limited research funding may be available following successful application to the local research and development committee.
Administrative duties the post holder will have continuing responsibility at all times for the care of patients in their charge and for contributing in the smooth running of the service. The post holders will also be expected to share the administrative duties with the other consultants including attendance at Care Group and Departmental meetings, etc.
The post holder will be responsible for the professional supervision and management of junior staff to ensure standards of care are maintained. Development of individuals and of teams is part of the consultant role.
The appointee will be expected to participate in the postgraduate teaching of medical staff and undergraduates attached to the Trust and in the training of all grades of staff.
CPD - the post holder is responsible for ensuring that they meet the College requirements for CPD.
It is expected that the appointees will actively and regularly participate in Clinical Audit. Evaluation of the departments performance against agreed measures will take place.
If the post holder is involved in the care of a patient who subsequently initiates a claim against the Trust they will be expected to provide, free of a charge, an opinion and statement of facts on the case.
Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of all patients presenting to the Emergency Department.
To share with colleagues responsibility for the day-to-day management of the Emergency Department.
Teaching and Training of intermediate and, junior medical staff, nursing staff, medical students and paramedic staff.
To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.
To have responsibility for and actively participate in continuing professional development (CPD).
The new appointee will be expected to join the consultant body in leading by example, managing the sickest patients, engaging with the juniors to ensure safe and timely management and working with the nursing staff to ensure adequate patient flow.
The appointees will be expected to be involved in implementing the Trusts clinical governance programme. This includes active participation in clinical audit, clinical guidelines/pathways, and professional development, appraisal and risk management.
