Due to retirement we are seeking a dedicated Consultant Psychiatrist to join our Crisis Home Treatment Team providing specialist support to individuals experiencing acute mental health crises ensuring care is delivered in the least restrictive setting.

You will be primarily responsible for delivering a quality clinical service and to be actively involved in the strategic development of the team working with the Service manager and the rest of the team to enhance and steer development of the service.

You will have a dedicated office, support from our excellent ACP and a secretary. The post is three days per week however there may be an option to top up to full time. Herefordshire is in the Wye Valley and has the Forest of Dean; the Malvern Hills; and the Brecon Beacons National Park within easy access to provide an excellent work/life balance. Transport links are provided by the M50 which links with M4 and M5 and there are direct train routes to London, Birmingham and Cardiff.

Main duties of the job

The Hereford Crisis and Home Treatment Team is a multi-disciplinary team of mental health professionals providing a 7 day per week 24 Hr service to people aged 17 and over experiencing an acute psychiatric crisis. The team provides an alternative to acute hospital treatment by offering intensive community-based interventions and gate keeping all potential hospital admissions. Where a hospital admission does occur, CAHTT can assist in shortening the inpatient stay by facilitating supportive discharge back to the community.

• Safely assess and manage patients
• Undertake MHA assessments as the approved doctor under Section 12(2) as required;
• Work with local managers and professional colleagues
• Develop and maintain care pathways and pathways of communication with other services
• Ensure effective patient aftercare plans are developed, implemented and maintained,
• Provide verbal and written evidence to MHA Tribunals
• Undertake team supervision, contributing to risk management, safeguarding and safe prescribing practices
• Liaise with and give clinical advice to agreed statutory/voluntary agencies,
• Participate and contribute to a regular clinical audit process to ensure services are of a high quality and best clinical practice
• Undergo annual appraisal, develop a personal development plan and remain in good CPD standing with the RCPsych working towards relicensing and revalidation

Job responsibilities

This post is well-established and for many years filled by long-term colleagues; it became available due to retirement of the previous consultant. There is a weekly local teaching programme and a Trust's Grand Rounds monthly. You will be supported in your CPD and development of a special interest. You will be joining a supportive, cohesive group of consultants who work together to provide the services locally.

Person Specification

Knowledge

• Knowledge about the NHS and understanding the evidence base underpinning the delivery of high quality services.
• Ability to manage, improve or to support the clinical operations of the service.
• Understanding of the importance of excellent team working relationships and ability to put this into practice.
• Knowledge about mental health policy with ability to think strategically and manage change.
• Knowledge of appropriate medical, pharmacological and psychological treatments.

Skills and abilities

• Ability to communicate effectively in English in both verbal and written formats
• Demonstrable commitment to providing excellent mental health services.
• Commitment to maintenance and development of medical leadership.

Qualifications

• MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
• CCT holder or equivalent (or within 6 months of becoming eligible for CCT)
• Current full registration with the GMC (or eligible for full registration with the GMC at the time of appointment).
• GMC Licence to practice.
• Approval (or eligible for approval) under Section 12 (2) of the Mental Health Act.
• Eligible to work in the UK.
• Higher degree of other qualification in research methodology.
• Qualification or previous training in leadership.
• Qualification and/or experience in providing training for doctors

Experience

• Provision of high quality mental health services, as trainee or Consultant.
• Previous experience of working in a clinical leadership role with positive relationships with team members.
• Previous experience of NHS Mental Health Services.
• Previous experience of clinical leadership in Community Mental Health Teams

Additional criteria

• Able to drive or to provide own transport to meet the requirements of the post.
