Job description

Consultant Psychiatrist & Consultant Physician
Internal Professional Advisers

Location: Manchester
Salary: Commensurate with NHS experience
Hours: Part-time, permanent, one day per week

The Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman (PHSO) is a modern, vibrant organisation full of passionate, committed people. We make final decisions on complaints that have not been resolved by UK Government departments and the NHS in England. We work closely with people to understand where, how and why public services sometimes fall short, and we find ways to put it right.

Based in the centre of Manchester, we have created a diverse and inclusive culture, whilst offering flexibility to give you the autonomy to work in the best way suited to you.

As an Internal Professional Adviser, you will be employed on a part-time contract, allowing you to continue your vital work within the NHS. This ensures that you bring the most current and up-to-date knowledge and experience to our organisation, enhancing both clinical practice and the organisational context in which services are delivered.

If you are ready to make a meaningful impact and share your expertise, we encourage you to apply and join our team!

The role:

  • Provide evidence-based clinical advice to caseworkers
  • Support PHSO key strategic objectives by taking an active role in quality assurance activities and in sharing the learning from complaints to enhance clinical practice and improve patient care
  • Work effectively as part of the Clinical Advice team, contributing to discussions and developments to enhance the provision of Clinical Advice
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the external context in which PHSO operates, including, where appropriate, building relationships with external organisations to improve the influence and accessibility of the Office in line with the external relations strategy.

The successful applicants will:

  • Have at least 5 years’ experience working as a consultant
  • Be currently practising as a consultant physician in the NHS with active general medicine on-call commitments OR be currently practicing in the NHS as a consultant psychiatrist
  • Be able to condense complex medical issues into a format understandable by lay colleagues and complainants in written and verbal formats
  • Be able to adapt to working as part of an office-based, non-medical team under non-clinical leadership.

If you want to join a dedicated team that makes a real difference and helps raise standards in public services, then this is the opportunity for you.
