Substantive Consultant in Obstetrics with

Special Interest in Fetal Medicine

There is an exciting opportunity and applications are invited for a Consultant Obstetrician based at Newham University Hospital with special interest in Fetal Medicine.

This is a whole-time locum position for a maximum of ten programmed activities [10 PAs]. This appointment requires a wide experience in General Obstetrics, Labour Ward Management training and special interest in Fetal Medicine. In any case, the successful candidate will be encouraged to develop other special interests based on service requirements. You will also have a role in coordinating educational programmes within Women's and Children's Health.

Candidates should be on the specialist register or are within six months of attaining CCST or equivalent in Obstetrics. Good interpersonal skills, flexibility and team working abilities are essential.

Main duties of the job

An enthusiastic and highly motivated clinician is invited to apply for the post of Consultant Obstetrician with special interest in fetal medicine. This is a substantive position and post holder will work within Women and Children's division based at Newham University Hospital, which is part of Barts Health NHS Trust, one of the largest NHS trusts in the UK. A wide experience in General Obstetrics and Labour Ward Management is expected for this post. Ability to perform fetal medicine scans with confidence will be essential. This is a 10.00 Programmed activities (PA) role. The post holder will join the existing team of 20 Consultants in the department and is expected to complement existing sub specialities, but full support and training will be provided in developing a new speciality interest based on the needs of the service.

The duties of the post holder may also involve working on other sites of Barts NHS Trust depending on clinical needs and clinical interests. The post will support the implementation of the EWTD standards and compliance with working hours and as part of the Trust's response to achieving NHS targets including the 18-week referral to treatment target and the A& E waiting targets.

Job responsibilities

General obstetrics, coordination of labour ward activities in collaboration with midwifery leaders and related clinical governance issues. You will participate in 1:21 on call rota covering obstetrics. The on-call consultant will be routinely expected to be resident on site until 22.00h, and at any time during their shifts depending on clinical needs.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential

  • CCST/CCT (or equivalent), or within 6 months of a date, or entry on the Specialist Register of the GMC for Obstetrics & Gynaecology
  • Demonstrable skills in department management
  • ATSM or Equivalent in Fetal Medicine
  • ATSM in Obstetrics and Labour Ward Management
  • Wide experience in Obstetrics

Desirable

  • Experience in Management of Recurrent Miscarriages.
  • Completed recognised management course

Experience
Essential

  • Record of Teaching at under- and post- graduate levels.
  • Evidence of multidisciplinary teaching.

Desirable

  • Record of attendance at training for trainer courses.
  • Record of self-development as trainer i.e. APLS/ATLS etc.

Knowledge
Essential

  • An understanding of Clinical Governance and its application to Obstetrics.
  • Record of Completed audit projects

Desirable

  • NHS complaint handling
  • Critical incident reporting
  • Risk management Training
