This post has been funded to enhance the Trust's existing Neurotrauma service and development of a subspecialty interest is welcomed potentially to expand in peripheral nerve surgery, complex spine surgery, or neuromodulation.
The appointee will participate in the general neurosurgery on call rota and neurotrauma consultant of the week rota. They will be encouraged to develop the service and will be supported in doing so.
Fellowship training in an intended area of subspecialty interest is desired. An indicative job plan is included within the job specification.
Main duties of the job
The reformed health service requires that consultants become increasingly involved in the management and administration of resources in their departments. The successful appointee will need to demonstrate professional excellence and efficient delivery of care. He/she will need to agree levels of activity and throughput in the outpatient department with the General Manager and Clinical Lead. These activity levels will address the contracted number of episodes and reflect the provision of main theatre operating time, so that waiting lists are maintained at acceptable levels. Activities will be reviewed and agreed annually as part of the Trust's job planning process. The job plan will be reviewed additionally after the first six months in post, to ensure that it meets the needs of the Trust and that it provides adequate support following this appointment.
All new consultants in the department of neurosurgery are offered close support by colleagues in the first year following their appointment. The precise details of this will be agreed with - and modified to suit the needs of - the successful appointee.
