Job description

The Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust wishes to appoint an ambitious, highly trained and committed Consultant Neurologist to join our existing team of Neurologists at the Walton Centre.

This job would be ideally suited for an applicant with either Movement Disorder, Epilepsy or Multiple Sclerosis sub-specialties interest, though consultants with other neurological specialist interests are also welcome to apply.

This is a unique opportunity to join a dynamic organisation that has an excellent reputation for delivering high quality care. As the UK's only dedicated neuroscience centre, the Walton Centre provides one of the most comprehensive ranges of neuroscience services in the UK. We serve a population in excess of 3.5 million with a team of over 40 neurologists. We operate a neurology network model from the main hospital in North Liverpool, providing a range of satellite services across Merseyside, Cheshire and North Wales. Neurologists at the centre recognise the need to deliver a high standard of service to patients, general practitioners, and hospital doctors throughout the area. We provide out-patient clinics, and ward consultations in each general hospital across the region. Most patients are dealt with entirely in the district general hospitals but referral to specialist clinics in the centre is encouraged where this will add to the quality of care. All in-patient care is provided in the centre.

Main duties of the job

There will be an expected commitment to 4 clinics each week. There will be opportunities to develop specialist clinics at WCFT or a satellite hospital, depending on the successful applicant's preference and negotiation, in accordance with the service needs of the Trust.

There is some flexibility in the job plan, which may be negotiated between the successful candidate and the Trust. Two days a week may be at satellite location (linked hospital or community clinic) and three days in Liverpool at WCFT.

The appointee will have responsibility for the training and supervision of Junior Medical Staff who work with him/her and will devote time to this activity on a regular basis. If appropriate, he/she will be named in the contracts of doctors in training grade as the person responsible for overseeing their training, and as a main source of advice to such doctors on their careers.

You are expected to participate in medical audit, appraisal and mandatory training in the Centre, as well as participate in Continuing Medical Education, including the "in house" CME on Wednesday mornings. The Trust supports the requirements for CME, as laid down by the Royal College of Physicians and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities.
