Location: Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre (DMRC) Stanford Hall, Loughborough, Leicestershire LE12 5QW

We are seeking to appoint a Consultant Rheumatologist to join the existing Defence Rheumatology Service (DRS) at Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre (DMRC) at Stanford Hall. We are looking for enthusiastic, innovative and dedicated individuals keen to add to our drive for continuous improvement to help us provide the best possible service to our patients.

About us

This is a modern, purpose-built tri-service rehabilitation centre opened in 2018, located near Loughborough and is administratively part of Defence Primary Healthcare (DPHC). DMRC’s purpose is to provide inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation for SP’s with musculoskeletal and neurological injuries related to sports, exercise & training, overseas operational activities, other trauma or neurological diagnosis or event. The delivery of care is centred around intensive, residential, group-based exercise therapy provided by multi-disciplinary teams (MDT). Teams include Complex Trauma, Neuro, Lower Limbs, Spines, Upper Quadrant and Specialist Rehabilitation. DMRC is the only Defence location offering DRS. DRS provide an MDT approach, enhanced pain/inflammatory assessment, medication optimisation to facilitate rehab, function and occupational status. The site includes clinical radiology and active research and education departments. Facilities on site include gyms, swimming pool, free parking, on site shop, golf course, running track, tennis courts.

Job Purpose:

DRS will accept referrals for any SP in the UK military with any rheumatological concern. As a result, the caseload consists of patients with a breadth of presentations ranging from complex conditions often co-managed in the NHS, to more routine inflammatory and non-inflammatory illness. With an increasing caseload managing patients through their careers, a civilian Rheumatology Consultant has been established to join the team of Defence Rheumatologists, Rheumatology Specialist Nurses and Allied Healthcare Professionals (AHPs) to deliver an occupationally focused Rheumatology resource within a rehabilitation service, in collaboration with wider Defence Medical Services.

A successful candidate will:

  1. Practice high quality clinical MDT Rheumatology and promote a culture of evidence based best practice in line with relevant literature and guidelines.
  2. Deliver Clinical Leadership within an established culture of continuous improvement and governance.
  3. Collaborate with a MDT consisting of Military Rheumatologists, Clinical Nurse Specialists, and admin team.
  4. Bring innovation and creativity to further develop the Defence Rheumatology Service.

Tasks & Responsibilities Include:

  1. Adherence to principles and values outlined in GMC Good Medical Practice (see link at https://www.gmc-uk.org/ethical-guidance/ethical-guidance-for-doctors/good-medical-practice).
  2. Management of rheumatology clinics – assessment and review, to manage ASPIRE rehabilitation group, named consultant responsibility for Rheumatology care of patients whilst at DMRC (residential or outpatient).
  3. Provision of clinical supervision to members of the MDT.
  4. Provision of education and support to teams at DMRC, Regional Rehabilitation Units and to Defence Primary Healthcare.

Person Specification

Qualifications and registrations

Essential

  • Full General Medical Council (GMC) Registration with a licence to practice.
  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register.
  • Member of Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) or equivalent.
  • Evidence of Appraisal and Continuous Professional Development.
  • Experience working in inflammatory and rheumatological conditions.

Desirable

  • Higher qualification e.g. Masters, MD, PhD.
  • Evidence of recent training as a commitment to personal and professional development.
  • Evidence of published research or literature in the relevant field.

Ten Rheumatology PAs are currently available (8 DCC and 2 SPAs) without on call commitment. Job plans will be tailored to the individual’s needs and desires where possible and those not wishing to work full time will be equally welcomed.
