Main Duties of the Job

Online applications are invited for a Consultant Paediatric Nephrologist post at Southampton Children's Hospital, a 150 bedded hospital that is part of University Hospital Southampton. This is a permanent, full-time post providing a tertiary nephrology service for 14 district general hospitals in Hampshire, Dorset, Wiltshire, West Sussex, Surrey, Berkshire, Isle of Wight and the Channel Islands. The post holder will join a dynamic team of 4 Paediatric Nephrologists in the regional Paediatric Nephro-Urology unit, which serves a population of circa 4.3 million.

Activities involve the diagnosis and management of children with all varieties of renal disease including acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease (including all forms of renal replacement therapy), hypertension, glomerular disease, renal stone disease (supraregional) and tubulopathies. Nephrology shares a 24-bedded ward with urology and surgery. We are a major centre for the University of Southampton School of Medicine.

Job Responsibilities

You will be part of the regional Paediatric Nephrology on call service (on call approx 11 weeks a year).

  • You will provide antenatal counselling where the foetus has been found to have an abnormality of the kidneys and/or urinary tract. These clinics will be shared with Dr Harmer and Mr Brownlee, Consultant Paediatric Urologist.
  • You will share a monthly joint nephro-urology clinic with Dr Harmer; this will be approximately 5 clinics per year. These clinics are run with Mr Manoharan, Consultant Paediatric Urologist.
  • We have a weekly transplant clinic and a weekly low clearance clinic (the latter includes peritoneal dialysis patients). You will attend these pro rata (circa 11 weeks a year).
  • You will have a weekly General Nephrology clinic on non-on call weeks. This will include a 3 monthly regional clinic in Poole Hospital. You will be the network liaison consultant with that hospital.
  • We are involved in a number of multi-centre, portfolio-adopted research projects and would hope that you would become involved with these.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Training

Essential:

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • GMC registration with a licence to practice
  • Membership of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health or equivalent
  • Advanced Paediatric Life support certificate (or equivalent)
  • Membership of British Association for Paediatric Nephrology or equivalent

Desirable:

  • CCT in Paediatric Nephrology (or proposed CCT date within 6 months of interview)
  • Higher degree e.g. MSc, MD or PhD

Previous or Relevant Experience

Essential:

  • Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
  • Full training in paediatric nephrology
  • Experience in looking after children undergoing all forms of renal replacement therapy
  • Audit and clinical governance experience

Desirable:

  • Research experience, publications and interest in developing research programme

Aptitudes and Skills

Essential:

  • Knowledge of current safeguarding legislation
  • Evidence and ability to work effectively in multi-professional teams
  • Understanding of equality and diversity and how this affects patients, visitors and staff
  • Evidence and ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and colleagues (verbal and written communication skills in English)
  • Demonstrate good organisational skills including ability to prioritise effectively and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrate the ability to be calm, compassionate, and able to respond efficiently to various circumstances, which may change rapidly
  • Evidence of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
  • Able to travel to meet requirements of the post

Desirable:

  • Ability to perform native and transplant renal biopsies in anaesthetised and sedated children
  • Evidence from feedback of high-quality teaching
