Consultant in Neurology and Neurophysiology

South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Applications are invited for multiple Consultant posts, totalling 18 PAs, based at The James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.

The newly appointed consultants will provide general neurology services including: outpatient clinics; ward rounds; consultations on other wards and the associate administrative duties. This may include the provision of satellite clinics.

A special interest in neurophysiology would be preferred, however other areas would be considered where they complement existing services. Applications from exclusive neurophysiologists are also encouraged.

Main duties of the job

The appointed consultant(s) will:

  • Maintain the highest clinical standards in the practice of Neurology and Neurophysiology.
  • Cover for colleagues' annual leave and other authorised absences.
  • Provide professional supervision and management of resident medical staff.
  • Be actively involved in the management of the department including attendance at the fortnightly Consultant/Directorate meetings and regular consultant away days.
  • Take part in annual appraisals (mandatory for all Consultants), carried out by the Clinical Director. Appropriate time and assistance will be provided for preparation.
  • Involvement in research - Joint research projects are undertaken with both the University of Teesside (University of the Year 2009) and Durham University and involvement in the further development of research links.
  • Any other duties which may be required.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Training

  • Full GMC registration
  • Relevant CCT or those on the specialist register through CESR or European Community Rights or equivalent ('equivalence' must be confirmed by PMETB/GMC by date of AAC)
  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within 6 months of the date of the AAC
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Training in appraisal techniques or educational supervision

Clinical experience and effectiveness

  • Substantive experience of neurological management in OP and IP settings.
  • Relevant experience in any declared specialist interest pertinent to the post
  • Evidence of clinical audit
  • Specialist skills to compliment those of other staff.
  • CCST in Clinical Neurophysiology
  • Ability to provide expert clinical opinion in neurophysiology
  • Knowledge and experience in quantitative EMG, neonatal and paediatric EEG, prolonged EEG recordings, and interpretation of evoked potential studies
  • Knowledge and experience in specialised NCS/EMG and Paediatric NCS/EMG

Management and administrative experience

  • Evidence of working in a multi-disciplinary team
  • Ability to organise and prioritise complex demands
  • Evidence of teaching and training skills for resident doctors
  • Management experience and training
  • Teaching skills
