Consultant in Nephrology

Full Time - 10 PAs

We are looking to appoint a consultant Nephrologist and General Physician into a varied nephrology and general medical post (10PA). The appointee will join the existing team of 19 Nephrologists (13 WTE) and 12 Transplant Surgeons. In addition to containing a varied nephrology commitment, the post also contains a commitment to Acute and General Medicine. Main duties of the job

You will deliver excellent care in all aspects of nephrology, dialysis (including satellite dialysis) and transplantation, as well as manage ward referrals and complex inpatients.

The Department of Nephrology and Transplantation is one of the largest in the UK, providing high quality regional and supra-regional kidney care. We provide a full range of kidney treatment services, perform over 250 transplants a year, have the largest living kidney donor programme in the UK and are a supra-regional centre for pancreas transplantation. We offer a full range of dialysis therapies both at home and through a network of satellite units. We are nationally recognised for our quality of care, innovation in clinical practice and service delivery, and for our close functional integration with the programmes at Kings' College London and our Comprehensive Biomedical Research Centre.

Teaching
  • Experience of undergraduate teaching and postgraduate training
  • Experience in training non-medical clinicians
  • Teaching course or qualification
  • Experience of running a local training programme
Research
  • Understanding of the principles and applications of clinical research, research governance and research ethics
  • Publication in peer-reviewed journals of original research related to kidney disease
Knowledge & Skills
  • Experience of multi-professional working and ability to work as an effective member of a multidisciplinary team
  • Experience in supervision of junior medical staff
  • Training/qualification in Educational Supervision
Clinical Experience
  • Comprehensive clinical experience in all aspects of nephrology
  • Experience of managing haemodialysis patients, including acute, hospital based and satellite haemodialysis
  • Comprehensive clinical experience of acute transplantation
  • Independently proficient in all procedures including native, kidney transplant biopsies, tunnelled line insertions and transcutaneous PD catheter insertions
  • Experience in managing tubular disorders in the outpatient setting
Communication, leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to communicate with clarity and intelligently in written and spoken English; ability to build rapport, listen, persuade/ negotiate
  • Ability to take responsibility, lead, make decisions and exert appropriate authority.
  • Experience of performance management, developing and motivating staff
  • Evidence of leadership in the development of clinical services.
Clinical governance and audit
  • Track record of clinical governance, audit, management and IT skills.
  • Understanding of principles of audit.
  • Evidence of understanding of and adherence to the principles of Good Medical Practice set out by the General Medical Council.
  • Evidence of understanding of the role of clinicians in management and service development.
  • Evidence of contribution to effective clinical audit and clinical risk management
Qualifications and Training
  • Full UK GMC registration
  • Eligible to be included on the Specialist Register in General Medicine via: CCT or within six months of attaining CCT in nephrology or Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) or European Community Rights (if applicable)
  • Eligible to be included on the Specialist Register in Nephrology via: CCT or within six months of attaining CCT in nephrology or Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) or European Community Rights (if applicable)
  • Broad training demonstrating clinical experience in outpatient and inpatient nephrology and acute and general medicine
