Job description

There is a post available for a Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine with or without additional sessions in a related specialty at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust. This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic team of Intensivists and be involved with the re-development and expansion of a successful and thriving Critical Care Department.

The successful applicant will join the Critical Care team of 16 consultants. The Trust provides critical care services on two sites: Stoke Mandeville Hospital [12 beds] and Wycombe Hospital [6 funded beds, with infrastructure for 8 beds] and a Critical Care Outreach service at both Stoke Mandeville and Wycombe hospital sites, servicing a population of 0.5 million with 900 admissions across both sites annually.

Organisationally, the critical care department sits within the Anaesthetic and Critical Care Service Delivery Unit (SDU). The intensivists have anaesthetic or emergency medicine sessional commitments. The department would be able to accommodate consultants from other appropriate allied specialties within the Intensive Care Unit. There are also options available for a single-CCT intensivist with specifics depending on the interests of the applicant. Out-of-hours activity would be in Intensive Care for this post, with full participation in the ICU on-call rota.

Main duties of the job

We are seeking an enthusiastic, dynamic and dedicated Intensive Care Consultant to join a team of intensivists within the department of Anaesthesia and Critical Care. The successful candidate will take part full-time in the Critical Care on-call rota at Stoke Mandeville Hospital and Wycombe Hospitals. The post comprises Critical Care cover as detailed in the description above and job plan below. If the allied specialty is anaesthetics, there will typically be 2-4 anaesthetic sessions in the non-Critical Care weeks. For other allied specialties, the make-up of non-Critical Care weeks will be negotiated with the respective SDU leads.

Consultant staff are responsible for the training and supervision of junior medical staff and time is allocated to their teaching and supervision. Appropriately trained SAS doctors are encouraged to participate in the teaching programme, and to become educational supervisors and recognised trainers in their areas of expertise.

Person Specification

Experience

• General training in intensive care medicine and allied specialty
• Ability to make decisions at Consultant level.
• Extensive years of whole-time equivalence experience
• Post CCT experience

Qualifications & Training

• CCT/CESR holder in Intensive Care Medicine or Within 6 months of CCT at time of interview.
• CCT/CESR holder in Allied Specialty (Anaesthesia/Acute Medicine/Respiratory Medicine/Emergency Medicine) Or Within 6 months of CCT at time of interview.
• Advanced training and mastery of additional skill relevant to ICU practice e.g. echo, POCUS, transfer medicine, research, medical education and simulation etc. This should include a post-graduate or externally recognised qualification to score maximally e.g. Diploma level or equivalent

Skills, abilities & knowledge

• Evidence of good leadership skills
• Ability to organise a team and personal skills to undertake effectively the role of a Consultant
• Good personal and interpersonal skills
• Good spoken and written English. Good communication skills
• Evidence of Quality Improvement, service development or high quality clinical audit activity
• Evidence of good team working, ability to cooperate, persuade and negotiate within a senior clinical management team
• Knowledge of the organisation of the NHS.
• Ability to cope under pressure
• Published audit or research
• Management training and experience.
• Experience of teaching health care workers, doctors in training and/or undergraduates
• Knowledge of the Government's agenda for modernisation of the NHS
• Training and experience in Educational Supervision
• Ability to change and adapt.
• Training in teaching

Other Requirements

• Full GMC Registration with licence to practice
• Ability to travel to and between sites
